As Laguna Beach police concluded their investigation into the beating of a 55-year-old man on a local beach, the second adult suspect in the case was released on $30,000 bail. Deputy Dist. Atty. Craig McKinnon said Wednesday that charges will be filed against Christopher Michael Cribbins, 22, of San Clemente by the end of the week. Cribbins posted bail Tuesday evening.

A 22-year-old San Clemente man pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his arraignment on charges of assaulting a man during what authorities claim was a gay bashing. Christopher Michael Cribbins was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and committing a hate crime in the Jan. 9 beating of Loc Minh Truong, 55, of Costa Mesa. Truong was beaten and left on a rocky stretch of Laguna Beach near three gay bars. If convicted, Cribbins faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. Deputy Dist. Atty.

Laguna Beach police arrested two additional suspects Monday in what they described as a gay-bashing and released the identity of the still-unconscious victim, a 55-year-old Vietnamese immigrant. Christopher Michael Cribbins, 22, of San Clemente has been arrested on suspicion of assault with great bodily harm and violating the city's hate crime law, police said.

Angry and grieved, family members struggled Monday to come to terms with what had happened to Loc Minh Truong in their adopted homeland. "I know we live in a country where violence happens every day, people get beat up all the time," said Quat Truong, 35, the victim's nephew. "Still, you cannot believe how shocked I am that this happened to Loc." Loc Minh Truong's older sister, Ly Truong, had visited him at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo Monday morning.

Scheduling conflicts over jury selection and witness availability on Tuesday delayed the start of trial in the lawsuit brought by a 57-year-old man who was nearly beaten to death on a rocky Laguna Beach shoreline. The Orange County Superior Court trial is now set for Feb. 27, court officials said. Loc Minh Truong is seeking money for medical bills and other damages from two young men who admitted targeting him because they thought he was gay.

Christopher Michael Cribbins, 22, of San Clemente, was arrested on suspicion of "assault with force to do great bodily harm" and violating the city's hate crime law, police said. He is a clerk at a leather and suede store in Mission Viejo.

Jeff Michael Raines also pleaded not guilty to inflicting great bodily injury and committing a hate crime. He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 2. Raines was one of three young men arrested Jan. 9 in connection with the beating of Loc Minh Truong, 55, of Costa Mesa.
