Claremont school officials have decided to kick a high school senior out of school because they allege that, after keeping her under surveillance, they discovered that she lives outside the district's boundaries. But Victoria Banker is not just another student. Her mother is suing the Claremont Unified School District, alleging that it unconstitutionally charges fees for books and other items. She's seeking refunds for parents. A similar lawsuit recently cost Pasadena $227,000 to settle.

Norwalk Pioneer Baptist has refused to play three Express League baseball games against Huntington Beach Claremont, even if the forfeits result in missing the playoffs, Athletic Director Lee Fitzgerald said. Jay Webb says the $675 it will cost to play three sports at Claremont High this year is too much. So, he has decided to drop basketball and concentrate on football and baseball. Webb, a sophomore, will pay the necessary $450 to play them from his savings and by asking his parents for help. "With that much money due, something had to give," Webb said. "I even contemplated giving up another sport." Webb, 15, is not the only one at Claremont facing tough decisions concerning athletics.

Kevin Struve's birth 18 years ago was so unusual, Walter Cronkite mentioned it during his newscast that night. Reporters across the country called the Struve home in Claremont for the next several weeks. "I heard from people I hadn't talked to in years," said Richard Struve, Kevin's father. "Everybody wanted to know how it happened?" Richard did not have all the medical answers, but he could tell the callers that Kevin, a fraternal quadruplet, and his siblings were alive.

They moved toward him, but the tide was overpowering, so Jin Park encouraged Taeho Lee to swim to shore with him. But Lee was unwilling to abandon their friend. "Let's save Cliff!" Lee shouted. Those were his last words. Moments later, he and Cliff Yuan were dragged underwater. Lifeguards reached Yuan in time, but not Lee.

Still, people here seem to think the rambling field-stone building, which served as the city's only high school from 1912 to 1966, has great potential.
