Rodney Williams passed for 214 yards, and Tracy Johnson scored 3 touchdowns Friday as No. 14-ranked Clemson beat No. 20 Penn State, 35-10, in the Florida Citrus Bowl. Williams, resurrecting a passing attack that produced only 91 yards in a losing effort gainst South Carolina, completed 15 of 24 passes. Johnson scored on runs of 7, 6 and 1 yards as the Atlantic Coast Conference champions finished with a 10-2 record.

They take barbecue awfully seriously in South Carolina --- but they take Clemson University football even more so. A Pickens, S.C., police officer on Thursday said people's love of the sport has cost him a job. At a news conference in his lawyer's office, Michael McClatchy outlined his version of events on the night of Sept. 3, when he issued a ticket to Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney. McClatchy said he clocked the celebrated coach doing 63 miles an hour in a 35 mph zone in Pickens, about 20 miles from Clemson.

Clemson University is prepared to submit a report on alleged irregularities in its basketball program to the NCAA but says the report would not be made public until late next month. The school has compiled "a couple hundred" pages, Clemson's compliance director, Paul Aaron, said. "We've tried to be very, very thorough in looking at areas that (the NCAA) may or may not have even considered."

After a week of rumors, Clemson learned officially Wednesday that its football program is being investigated by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Athletic Director Bobby Robinson released a letter dated Tuesday from the NCAA informing university President Max Lennon it had begun a "preliminary inquiry" into possible NCAA rule violations.

Clemson did just enough to make Tommy West a winner in his Tiger coaching debut, scoring on Patrick Sapp's 21-yard touchdown pass to Terry Smith and Nelson Welch's extra point with 20 seconds to play for a 14-13 victory over Kentucky on Friday in the Peach Bowl. "With the circumstances, it was not very fair to them," West said, referring to Clemson's preparation under a new staff, one that taped players names on headgears during the bowl practice sessions so they would know who did what.

The NCAA put Clemson's basketball program on two years' probation for major rule violations Wednesday but stopped short of banning the Tigers from postseason play and television appearances. The NCAA Committee on Infractions prohibited any expense-paid, on-campus visits by basketball recruits next year and only two such visits in 1994. The committee also accepted the school's self-imposed sanctions, which include no off-campus recruiting until Aug.

Clemson will learn of possible sanctions against the men's basketball program today when it receives the long-awaited report on an NCAA investigation. If Clemson is placed on probation, it would be the fourth time in 16 years one of its athletic programs has faced such sanctions.

The NCAA infractions committee restored the eligibility of Wayne Buckingham, a 6-foot-9 forward at Clemson, because a school representative was not present during his entire interview with the NCAA. The NCAA has been investigating Clemson, including the academic certification of Buckingham, accused of lying to investigators.
