CHICAGO - It all began right here, when Vinny Del Negro took his first NBA head-coaching job with the Bulls. It lasted just two years, Del Negro getting fired after taking Chicago to playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010. Del Negro now is in his third season with the Clippers, his second opportunity to be a head coach. In his fifth season leading an NBA team, Del Negro said he has grown as a coach from "just the experience of doing it. " "I think you get better every year," Del Negro said before the Clippers played the Bulls on Tuesday night.

It was a direct salvo from Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro directed toward his starters after Saturday's win over the Phoenix Suns. They had given up 31 points on 50% shooting in the first quarter to the Suns, not a good sign that they were locked in on defense early. "Our starters gave more energy on the offense and not as much defense, and that's what will beat you in this league," Del Negro said. "We've got to change that mentality as soon as possible because this game easily could have gone a different way. " Del Negro was asked if he had said that to his starters.

Seven games into the regular season, and Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro still isn't sure what he's going to get from Lamar Odom . "No, not really," Del Negro said. Odom played double-figure minutes in the first two games but hadn't played more than 10 minutes until Sunday against the Hawks, when he played 11 minutes 29 seconds. Odom, who played a season-low four minutes against the Cleveland Cavaliers, played just the last 3:21 of the game after playing about eight minutes in the first half.

Besides having a burst bursa sac in his right elbow, Clippers power forward Blake Griffin is also dealing with a neck strain after a hit in practice Tuesday. But despite the injuries, Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said Griffin will play against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night at Staples Center. "His elbow is a concern," Del Negro said. "His neck is a concern. But Blake is a tough kid. He'll play through it and give us what he can give us. " Del Negro said that Griffin's elbow is irritating the All-Star "a little bit," but that Griffin has played through the pain before.

DeAndre Jordan got the ball in the low post against Denver on Thursday night when suddenly the Nuggets double teamed the Clippers' young center. A few plays later, Jordan got the ball down low and was double teamed again. Jordan admitted after practice Saturday that he was startled by the attention from the Nuggets. But it was also an instructive moment for Jordan. "After the game, Chauncey [ Billups ] told me, 'I can tell you've never been double teamed in the NBA,'" Jordan said, smiling.

After a disastrous season with the Dallas Mavericks, former Lakers star Lamar Odom is back in town with a new team: the Los Angeles Clippers. That's not all that's new: Odom and wife Khloe Kardashian, the stars of E!'s reality show "Khloe & Lamar," just announced their new holiday fragrance "Unbreakable Joy. " The timing of the announcement is a bit off, since there's not much joy for Odom so far with the Clippers. He may have "Unbreakable Joy," but he's not exactly breaking a sweat on the basketball court.

His mind is playing little games with him, forcing Chris Paul to think more about his thumb rather than just reacting to the game. Paul had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb Aug. 21, but he has been involved in full-contract practices for almost two weeks and he has played in two exhibition games for the Clippers. Yet, Paul has been hesitant while playing. "The other night, there were times that I knew that I could steal the ball, but I don't want to risk it," Paul said.

The hitch is not in Blake Griffin's giddy-up, but in his shooting motion. Just as the Clippers' star forward is about to release the ball, he pauses, a hiccup he has tried to stop by working with the team's new shooting coach, Bob Thate . During warmups before the Clippers' 106-104 exhibition loss against Denver on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Griffin's shooting release looked smoother than before. But during the game, the holdup in his release reappeared when Griffin went to the free-throw line, where he shot 52% last season.

The kinder, gentler Clippers went easy on the new kid in class. Of course, the new "kid" turned 40 on Friday. There were no walkers or rocking chairs pulled out on the court for forward Grant Hill , and he said he didn't even take much verbal abuse. There were, however, cheerful-looking birthday cupcakes from the team's staff, forming the number 40, and one candle. "I don't think I'm 40. I don't feel 40. But I guess I am," Hill said, smiling after practice. "In particular, when you do this, at least in sports with a lot of young people, predominantly 20-year-olds, so you're around a lot of young folk, young people.

The Clippers' playoff run last spring and their busy off-season of stockpiling talent simply increased the pressure on them to be successful this season. That burden to succeed rests not only with All-Stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, but also with the man who is expected to lead them, Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro. In May, the Clippers picked up the option on Del Negro's contract, giving him a third season as coach for about $2 million. Still, Del Negro, 46, enters the new season in the final year of his contract.
