When Joe Hamilton is alone in his room, he can't help himself. His thoughts will drift to what it would be like to sit on the front row at the Downtown Athletic Club and hear something like this: "The Heisman Trophy is awarded to Joe Hamilton of Georgia Tech." The very idea would have seemed preposterous in 1995 when the undersized quarterback from tiny Alvin, S.C., signed with a team that went 1-10 the previous season. It doesn't seem so farfetched anymore.

DuPont Co. will pay $2.5 million to each of Georgia's law schools to settle charges it withheld evidence in a 1993 civil case. The case involved charges that the Wilmington, Del., chemical giant withheld soil samples in a suit brought in Georgia by a group of nurseries. The $11 million, which includes $1 million to fund an annual symposium, will be used to set up professorial chairs on professional ethics.

Thirty-five years after they last played each other in football, Georgia and Boston College will meet tonight (5 o'clock, Ch. 11, 51 and SCORE/FNN) in the Hall of Fame Bowl. Both teams finished 8-3 after recovering from slow starts. No. 17 Georgia won five of its last six regular-season games, while unranked Boston College won its last seven games. The game offers a contrast of styles. Boston College quarterback Shawn Halloran passed for 2,090 yards and 17 touchdowns, with 6 interceptions.

Shawn Halloran's five-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Martin with 32 seconds remaining Tuesday night gave Boston College a 27-24 victory over 17th-ranked Georgia in the Hall of Fame Bowl football game. The game-winning throw capped a 12-play, 76-yard drive kept alive when Georgia was called for a pass interference penalty. The infraction gave Boston College a first down at the Georgia 17-yard line with 51 seconds left.

The Colleges It's always sad to see once great teams on the decline. Who would have thought that Boston College (0-1) and Georgia (0-1) would still be winless at this point in the season? And leading the nation in defeats as well as tied for the Bottom Ten lead? Sad but true. BC fell, 14-28, to BYU, whose program has improved since it dropped the requirement that only descendants of Brigham Young could play on its athletic teams. Georgia, meanwhile, came through with a 16-20 loss to Alabumble.

For Georgia's often-criticized defensive secondary, Saturday was a day of redemption. Ridiculed in a local newspaper as a unit that couldn't cover their mouths when they coughed, they limited Florida to 162 yards passing in No. 10-ranked Georgia's 23-10 victory over the No. 17 Gators.

Coach Vince Dooley of 14th-ranked Georgia sounded like a man who had just lost, rather than one who had gained his 191st coaching victory. "They dominated the game," Dooley said Saturday night after the Bulldogs struggled to a 30-16 victory over Georgia Tech. "They totally outplayed us." The Bulldogs, 18-point favorites, didn't put the game on ice until freshman Rodney Hampton ended the scoring on a 33-yard run with 7:22 remaining.

Kentucky has offered its coaching job to Tubby Smith, a former Rick Pitino assistant who led Georgia to consecutive 20-win seasons, Georgia Athletic Director Vince Dooley said Thursday. Dooley said Smith flew to Lexington, Ky., on Wednesday night to meet with Wildcat Athletic Director C.M. Newton. "I do know that they would like to have him in Kentucky," Dooley said. "He was offered the job. It's his job to either take or turn down.

Converted defensive back Robert Edwards set a school record with five touchdowns, rushing for 169 yards and four touchdowns and also scoring on a 45-yard pass reception, leading Georgia to a 42-23 season-opening victory over South Carolina on Saturday. Edwards scored on runs of 13, one, five and 58 yards in the second half after the Gamecocks had built a 17-7 lead on Reed Morton's 27-yard field goal just over four minutes into the third quarter of the Southeastern Conference game.

Litterial Green, Georgia's highly regarded senior guard, thought about leaving school to make himself available for the NBA draft, after his father suffered a heart attack 13 months ago. "I was kind of afraid," Green said. "I wanted him to see me play at the next level." After talking with his father last spring, he decided he could wait and returned to Georgia. "Son, you're going to be playing ball long after I'm gone," his father told him. "This is your decision.

There are the obvious differences between Cal State Fullerton and Georgia. A capacity crowd in the Titans' new on-campus stadium wouldn't fill the end zone in Georgia's 85,434-seat Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs award 95 full scholarships a year; Fullerton allots the equivalent of 47. Georgia has appeared in 29 bowl games, most of them major; the Titans played in the California Bowl in 1983 and something called the Mercy Bowl in 1971. Then, there are the not-so-obvious differences.
