The state Department of Conservation came to the Southeast area last week bearing grants for two cities and a church that have pledged help in the recycling effort. Compton was awarded $40,500 to help start a curbside recycling program. A Compton church got $40,000 and the city of Whittier got $10,000, both for education programs designed to increase environmental and recycling awareness.
