A 20-year-old Laguna Niguel man who led Orange County sheriff's deputies to a cache of stolen computers and computer components earlier this month, faces several felony charges arising from a string of school burglaries in south Orange County in July. The Orange County Sheriff's Department is seeking approval for a $997,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice that would help pay for various upgrades in law enforcement technology. The Board of Supervisors will decide Tuesday whether to approve the grant proposal, which would upgrade the Sheriff's Department computer equipment and purchase new equipment for community policing programs.

Printrak International Inc. in Anaheim has donated $360,000 worth of computer equipment and software to Cal State Fullerton's School of Engineering and Computer Science. The gift, a combination of new and used equipment, will be used to upgrade the school's computer laboratories and replace aging equipment. A recent federal Law Enforcement Block Grant is going toward computer equipment in the Police Department. Police Chief James Cook said the computers will link patrol officers with the station and enable them to receive information on suspects faster. The computers also will link the department with the County Jail. The $106,000 grant will be used to buy 20 Pentium workstations, laptop computers for patrol cars, software and printers, according to Cook's report.

Westminster Capital Inc., a Beverly Hills financial services firm, said Friday that it has acquired a 68% stake in Santa Ana-based Logic Technology Group Inc., a privately held company doing business as Matrix Visual Solutions Inc., for $4.8 million in cash. Matrix rents and sells audiovisual and computer equipment. Its annual revenues total about $6.4 million.

Computer equipment and other items valued at more than $5,000 were stolen from a classroom at Blanche Reynolds Elementary School in the 400 block of Valmore Avenue, Ventura police said Tuesday. The burglar shattered a classroom window and took four computers, a printer, an acoustic guitar and several CDs, police said. The theft was discovered about 7 a.m. Tuesday. No arrests have been made.

Police were seeking four burglars who rammed trash bins through the windows of a computer store Tuesday, then fled with $50,000 in equipment. The four used a rented truck to push two commercial trash bins through the front windows of Micro Center on Edinger Avenue just after midnight, investigators said. A store video camera showed four masked men hauling out computer equipment on dollies. They fled before police arrived.

A computer company that was robbed of $182,000 worth of equipment and later solicited to buy its own stolen products alerted sheriff deputies, who arrested a Santa Ana man, authorities said Wednesday.
