Concordia University administrator Henry Aschbrenner has been named vice president of the campus and executive director of its fund-raising arm, the Concordia University Foundation. Aschbrenner will be responsible for overseeing the university's major fund-raising drive, "On Wings of Eagles," in which officials hope to raise $30 million by 2000 for new facilities, student scholarships and other projects.

Concordia University announced this week that it will launch a school of adult studies, the sixth academic school at the Irvine campus. Longtime Concordia administrator and professor Timothy Peters was appointed dean of the school, which will aim to help adults complete degrees. The school, which is scheduled to open this summer, will offer an applied liberal arts degree with an emphasis in business or education, and a degree in business technology management.

Sam Sabbara led Concordia University (10-1) with 15 points and helped seal a 95-74 victory over Concordia (Minn.) College in nonconference men's basketball Friday at Concordia University. Hitting six for six from the field and three for three from the line, Sabbara led seven teammates in double figures. Concordia University's Tim Morris scored 13 points in 18 minutes. Teammate Jeff Putnam added 12 points and three blocks and Danny Barajas also scored 12, with four steals.

Officials at Concordia University announced that the campus is more than halfway to its goal of raising $30 million for its On Wings of Eagles campaign. At the school's 20th anniversary celebration last month, university President D. Ray Halm said the college has received $16.1 million in contributions so far. On Wings of Eagles is a five-year campaign to raise money for the construction of a student center, day-care facility and dormitory. The campaign began in January.

Concordia University last week celebrated the opening of a 29-unit dormitory that will house 116 students. Concordia, a private Christian university, expects an enrollment of about 1,300 students this fall, its 22nd academic year. Construction of the dormitory was made possible by a fund-raising campaign, which will continue through June 2000.

Concordia University recently welcomed a new president, the Rev. Dr. Jacob A.O. Preus. He has worked as a professor of systematic theology and dean of faculty for Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He also served as liaison to the Seminary's Hispanic Institute of Theology. Before joining the seminary in 1986, he was a pastor for Lutheran congregations in California and Missouri. As a chaplain in the U.S. Navy Reserves, Preus served in Operation Desert Storm.
