Somewhere on Earth there must be a cheaper, easier, more exotic cruise, packed with even more beautiful sights and filled with more history, providing even tastier food, but for now, I'm happy to settle on this one: Ionian Cruises' daily excursion from Corfu, Greece, to Sarande, Albania. How cheap is it? Thirty-eight euros (about $55) for the round-trip boat ride, 19 euros (about $27) for a shore excursion that includes a fabulous buffet lunch. That's about $82 for an enchanting day in Albania, an additional dollar if you want a big glass of wine with your lunch.

As thousands of protesters took to the streets and violence ripped through central Athens, Greece's Parliament approved yet another round of punishing spending cuts to secure international rescue funds and ease fears of a calamitous financial collapse, potentially perilous for global markets and Europe's single currency. The legislation, featuring about $4 billion in severe budget trims including steep wage and pension cuts as well as 15,000 job reductions this year alone, was backed by 199 lawmakers of the 300-member Parliament.

Re the "fictional Greek island called Paxos": True, Cleopatra and almost every other traveler in the last 2,000 years has hurried past it in order to visit nearby Corfu, but the island is a charming place that produces some of the finest olive oil in Greece. You can find Paxos on the map just below Corfu in the Ionian Sea. JOHN McKINNEY Santa Barbara

If you go THE BEST WAY TO SARANDE AND BUTRINT The only daily cruises to Albania sail from the northern Greek island of Corfu. Communications are quirky in Corfu; my ATT cellphone, with a built-in GSM chip for Europe, worked perfectly in Athens and Santorini but not at all in Corfu. The safest way to buy tickets is to visit the head office of Ionian Cruises, a 15-minute walk from the heart of Corfu, and buy them with cash. Credit-card fraud is rampant throughout Greece. Seats are available even during the peak summer season a day in advance and often on the morning of the cruise.

Leaders of the 12 European Union nations convene on this Greek island Thursday and Friday to choose a successor to Jacques Delors as president of the EU's powerful executive commission. There is already talk of a possible deadlock at the meeting, the EU's semiannual summit. Delors' second five-year term expires at the end of the year, so if no successor is chosen at Corfu a special summit may be required in the fall. Meanwhile, Russian President Boris N.

What do travelers do when they return from far-off climes? According to Konstantine Kabilafkas, whose family runs Corfu Island Greek Restaurant in Agoura Hills, travelers arrive home and head for the nearest restaurant serving the food of the land they just visited, to see how close the chef comes to the real stuff. Such people seek to give substance to memory, of course, and when they show up in Kabilafkas' dining room, he calls on the "two Greek mamas," as he refers to them, in his kitchen.

Anyone accustomed to the harsh landscapes of rock, sea and sky on Greek islands such as Mikonos and Santorini will be surprised by Corfu's lush beauty. Corfu, the greenest of Greece's more than 1,400 islands, has a colorful countryside, charming coastal villages and a bustling main city. Located in the Ionian Sea off Greece's northwestern coast, adjacent to Albania, Corfu is perfect for walking. Mule paths, foot trails and dirt roads that crisscross the island provide access for hikers.

On her way to Rome, Cleopatra sailed right by Paxos, the smallest Ionian island, in a hurry to get to nearby Corfu. Too bad. The queen of Egypt missed a gem of an island. Perhaps Cleopatra made the same mistake travelers make today, imagining Paxos to be a miniature Corfu with a subservient personality, hardly worth a stopover when the full-scale original is so close.
