After a woman broke her leg at a Corona del Mar jetty Monday, the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department warned beach-goers to stay clear of such areas if they appear dangerous. "People are allowed on the rocks, but they should take into consideration their physical limitations," Fire and Marine Lt. John Blauer said. "We need people to use their common sense." The jetties are typically used by anglers and are closed to the public during high swells, Blauer said.

Call it The Mystery of the Mutilated Tree. On a quiet Sunday about three weeks ago, somebody took a chain saw to an expensive city-owned ficus tree that grows on the sidewalk along Coast Highway in downtown Corona del Mar. The city's General Services Department, which opened an unusual investigation into the incident, has "a list of suspects that is extremely narrow" and a possible motive.

It's not the highest asking price in the U.S., but an estate in Corona del Mar is listed for an eyebrow-raising $75 million. "There are just a handful of trophy homes along the coast," Carrie Williams, media director for the Coldwell Banker Previews McMonigle Group, said of the home. "It's secure and private for a celebrity, a sports star or someone of that ilk." What else can a buyer expect for $75 million? An oceanfront location for one thing, with views of the Pacific and Catalina Island.

Carnations, orchids, poinsettias and a garden of other flowers will blossom along Corona del Mar's business strip this summer because to the efforts of some artists and the Chamber of Commerce. Colorful depictions of more than a dozen flowers--for which many of Corona del Mar's street are named--have been painted onto canvas banners and will be attached to light posts high above Coast Highway. More than 50 banners will be hung--each one designed to coordinate with a street's name.

The search continued Wednesday for the bodies of a man and woman swept off a jetty in Corona del Mar by a large wave. "We have boats out there looking, but nothing so far," said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "We're going to keep searching for the next couple of days, and hopefully we'll be able to locate them." The pair, described as Asians in their 50s, were last seen about 9:15 a.m.

With a few notable exceptions, the vast majority of Orange County beaches fared well in Heal the Bay's 10th annual Beach Report Card, released Wednesday. Water quality at most local stretches of shoreline received high marks, but the county's ratings were marred by a high number of sewage spills, three of the region's worst beaches and a handful of chronic problem spots, including the part of Huntington State Beach that was closed for two months last summer.

Hale O Pau Hana means "house that signals the time to stop work and relax." It is the name of this Corona del Mar home, and it makes sense, for few things are more restful than a view of the sunset or the ocean. This house has both, and yet its owners over the years have not necessarily adhered to its name. All have left their industrious marks on the estate as well as on their respective fields. It began with Myford Irvine. He was president of the family-held Irvine Co.

The setting sun is the star -- what else could it be? -- of the show that unfolds each evening before appreciative audiences on the bluff above Corona del Mar State Beach. But it's not a solo act. Supporting roles are as important in creating one of the best performances by a sunset along the Pacific Coast: A fishing boat, trailed by seagulls, returning to Newport Harbor after a day at sea. A bell buoy ringing in the distance.

Despite protests from local florists, a weekly open-air farmers market will be inaugurated Saturday in Corona del Mar. The market will operate in public parking lots at Marguerite Avenue and Bayside Drive. Corona del Mar retail florists are opposed to the new market, contending it will take away business from flower shops. Five flower shops are within walking distance of the market, and three more are a few miles away. "It hurts local florists who have high overhead costs," said Joseph P.
