The hype over Sofia Coppola's upcoming film "The Bling Ring" is coming on strong. The latest to surface in my inbox is a news release from SmashBox cosmetics announcing the launch of its Bling Ring makeup kit -- lipstick, lip plumper, mascara, eye liner, primer and a faux croc clutch. Yes, for $48 (an $81 value!) you can "recreate the fame obsessed glamour of the film's stars," the release says. And that's not all: "To give fans a glimpse of the celeb fantasy that 'The Bling Ring' explores," Smashbox is giving away a trip for two to the film's premiere and afterparty June 4 in L.A. (The contest entry period is May 21-28, and info is available here .)

It's not quite Smashbox meets smash-and-grab, but the cosmetics brand has partnered with makers of "The Bling Ring" for a makeup kit inspired by the fashion-focused heist flick. According to the media materials announcing the merchandise tie-in with the Sofia Copolla film, which hits theaters in L.A. on June 14 and nationwide June 21, the collection aims to "re-create the fame-obsessed glamour of the film's stars with hot pink pouts, out-all-night kohl-rimmed eyes and lashes for days.

Although the event that MAC Cosmetics and Vogue magazine organized for Prabal Gurung at the Chateau Marmont on Monday night was billed as an "intimate cocktail party and dinner," it felt more like a patio-overflowing Hollywood awards show/CFDA master class mash-up. Spotted among the attendees were several "Star Trek Into Darkness" cast members beamed down ahead of Tuesday's premiere -- Zachary Quinto, Alice Eve and Zoe Saldana -- with Uhura taking the place of honor to Gurung's right at dinner.

Gregg Renfrew wants to change the way people live, starting with their cosmetics. Sitting in her light-filled office in Santa Monica, Renfrew rattles off the statistics she finds most alarming when it comes to some of the lotions, sprays and powders we apply to our bodies on a daily basis. "Did you know that there has not been a federal law passed since 1938 governing the cosmetics industry? And there are close to 12,000 ingredients used in all personal care products, from toothpaste to shampoo, lipstick to lotion, 80% of which have never been tested for safety on human health.

Struggling cosmetic firm Avon Products Inc. is cutting more than 400 jobs and leaving Ireland as it continues efforts to slim down amid profit plunges and other troubles. Avon said the job cuts, which account for about 1% of its global workforce, will be “spread across all regions and functions.” The New York firm also said Monday it's restructuring or closing operations in some "smaller, underperforming markets" in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. “We continue to work aggressively toward turning around the business,” Avon Chief Executive Officer Sheri McCoy said in a statement.

New homes are rarely perfect. Houses are giant puzzles with hundreds of parts, manufactured at different locations and carried to the building site. And try as they might to put together a flawless product, builders and their numerous subcontractors don't always get things right. Luckily, buyers are more likely to have to deal with cosmetic defects than out-and-out structural failures. Scratched refrigerators, broken bathroom tiles and faulty electrical outlets are far more prevalent than badly cracked foundations or sagging roofs.

European Union regulators on Monday announced a ban on the import or sale of any cosmetics with ingredients tested on animals. The EU banned animal testing of finished cosmetics in 2004, and animal testing of ingredients in 2008. The new ban, effective immediately, puts pressure on other parts of the world to ban animal testing of cosmetics too. [New York Times] Designers frequently give celebrities clothing for free, just for the publicity value of having the clothes worn by prominent walking billboards.

Cosmetics made with ingredients tested on animals is no longer allowed in the European Union, under a ban that took effect Monday. The European Commission, the governing body for the 27-country EU, said in a statement that the new rule “is in line with what many European citizens believe firmly: that the development of cosmetics does not warrant animal testing.” Officials said they plan to support development of alternative testing methods...

Andrew Luster was misled by members of a legal team who urged him to flee the country rather than face rape charges, according to witnesses in a court hearing Wednesday. Luster, the great-grandson of cosmetics magnate Max Factor, was convicted in absentia and is in court this week seeking a reduction in his 124-year sentence, as well as a new trial. The hearing, which is being held at the Ventura County Courthouse before retired Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathryne Ann Stoltz, is expected to last into next week.

Jason Wu X Lancome: Fresh off his repeat performance as inaugural ball gown designer in chief, Jason Wu has struck a deal with the Lancome cosmetics brand to collaborate on a line of makeup.
