Often it is hard to beat the same team twice in one season, especially a crosstown rival. "I'm not thinking about that," Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said about a possible finals meeting against the defending section champion. "We can only control what we're doing here. We're just going with the flow. " Second-seeded Crenshaw (11-1), which has won nine in a row since its 44-41 intersectional loss at Westlake Village Westlake, will host third-seeded Venice in the semifinals next Friday.  Corey Walker capped the Cougars' opening drive with a one-yard run, then Dominique Hatfield returned a fumble 17 yards to give Crenshaw a 14-0 lead with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

UCLA 44, Washington State36 (final) Now I feel bad about saying Washington State had little talent. That was a cheap shot born of frustration because of undisciplined play by both sides and officiating that was losing control of the game. The Cougars do have some talent, and it's giving the kind of effort that will probably save the team from a post-game Mike Leach rant. Note: we did say probably. At the end it was a one possession game. The Cougars passed for 456 yards and outgained UCLA in total offense by 193 yards.

One way to drive up UCLA Coach Jim Mora's blood pressure this week was to say three letters … U …S … C. The 17th-ranked Bruins play the Trojans next Saturday. First comes woeful Washington State and Mora has demanded his players focus on the task at hand rather than the team from across town. Staff writer Chris Foster (mostly) does exactly that in examining the Bruins vs. Cougars matchups and story lines: Double trouble The best quarterback-running back duo in the Pac-12 Conference - outside of Eugene, Ore. - is UCLA's Brett Hundley and Johnathan Franklin.

USC is coming. USC is coming. UCLA players can talk all they want about Washington State, their opponent this week, but facts are facts. An opportunity that has been absent for nearly two decades is so close the Bruins can't ignore it. Beating USC in two weeks could mean more than just beating USC. "We can see the prize," senior cornerback Sheldon Price said. That being? "The Pac-12 championship game," Price said. UCLA players talked about Washington State late Saturday night after a resounding 66-10 victory over Arizona, which beat the Trojans, 39-36, on Oct. 27. The Bruins travel to Pullman this week to face the Cougars, who have yet to win a Pac-12 game.

Good luck to quarterbacks who test the best cornerback tandem in the City Section. Crenshaw High's Dominique Hatfield and Mossi Johnson back down from nobody. On Friday night, in a neighborhood Coliseum League showdown against rival Dorsey, they combined for interceptions on three consecutive passes in the second quarter of Crenshaw's 34-14 victory. "I think they can play with anybody in the country," Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said. Hatfield finished with two interceptions, returning one 32 yards for a touchdown.

If you want inspiration, go watch the Los Angeles Crenshaw High football team. They're 30 players strong and keep showing what happens when a group of determined, passionate teenagers give their all for 48 minutes. "They understand it doesn't take an army to play football," Coach Robert Garrett said. On Saturday morning, Garrett was groggy and a little tired but never prouder of a team in discussing the Cougars' 13-2 victory over Westlake Village Oaks Christian, the No. 2-ranked team in the Southern Section Pac-5 Division.

BOISE, Idaho - Nose tackle Mike Atkinson returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State held off Brigham Young, 7-6, on Thursday night in a game dominated by defense. Boise State (2-1) forced five turnovers and held the Cougars (2-2) to 200 total yards. The Boise State offense wasn't that much better, managing 261 total yards. Atkinson's big play came early in the third quarter when he dropped back into coverage, picked of Riley Nelson's short pass and rumbled into the end zone.

UCLA faces a Houston team run by another cookie-cutter quarterback from Southlake (Texas) Carroll High School. David Piland replaced Case Keenum as the Cougars' quarterback this season. He completed 53 of 77 passes for 580 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-49 loss to Louisiana Tech last week. Piland , a sophomore, led Carroll to an 11-2 record in 2009. He was another in a line of successful Carroll quarterbacks. Chase Daniel (Missouri) and Greg McElroy (Alabama) are two former Dragons who went on to illustrious college careers.

UCLA's game against Houston in 2011 was memorable for the Bruins. "It felt like a track meet," cornerback Sheldon Price said. "They got some guys who can run all day. " And seemed to that day. UCLA ran up 554 total yards … and lost, 38-34. The loss rested squarely on the shoulders of Bruins defenders, who seemed to view tackling as an option while giving up 469 yards. "It's crucial that if they catch the ball, we wrap them up," Price said. The Bruins face an almost entirely new cast this season.

UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone won't have to look far to find old friends Saturday. He can just glance across the Rose Bowl field to the Houston coaching staff. Cougars Coach Tony Levine was a graduate assistant under Mazzone at Auburn. Running back coach Ken McClintock was a running back at Minnesota when Mazzone was a Gophers' assistant. Wide receiver and special teams coach Jamie Christian was on staff with Mazzone at Arizona State. "I learned everything from them," Mazzone said.
