The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday postponed a trial over the conduct of the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Investigations Section, whose officers have been involved in a number of controversial shootings. The court directed U.S. District Judge J. Spencer Letts to delay the trial until a number of constitutional issues can be resolved on appeal.

A federal appeals court in San Francisco on Friday blocked the extradition of three Irish nationalists--two of them convicted murderers--wanted by Britain on allegations of terrorism. The 2-1 decision by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals does not mean that Kevin Artt, Terence Kirby and Pol Brennan ultimately will be able to remain in the U.S. But they will be entitled to further hearings, and their attorneys expressed confidence that they will succeed in avoiding extradition.

A journalist can state with virtual impunity that a judge is unfit to serve, because such a statement is opinion protected by the 1st Amendment, a federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled Wednesday. The 3-0 ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals came in a suit filed by Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Bruce W. Dodds, who had sued ABC over an October 1994 "Prime Time Live" program.
