Your choices in San Francisco hotels are overwhelming. The prices can be too. So during our staff visit to the City by the Bay, we looked for reasonably priced hotels that had charm, location or both. We came back with 14 ideas on places to bed down. It's not a complete list, but it is eclectic, like the city itself. Mystic Hotel. This property, which opened in April, stands on a tunnel-adjacent block of Stockton Street that you'll never see on a picture postcard, yet it has style, as do the Burritt Tavern bar and restaurant downstairs.

The Marriott hotel chain said it will build another Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Laguna Hills. The $10-million, 137-room hotel is expected to open next spring. Marriott has already built two of the medium-priced Courtyard hotels in Orange County, in Buena Park and Santa Ana. A third, in Irvine near John Wayne Airport, will open in December. Room rates for the Laguna Hills hotel will run $74 on weekdays, $50 on weekends.

Marriott Corp. has purchased 3.74 acres in Park Del Amo, Torrance, for a $10-million, 149-room Courtyard hotel, according to Transpacific Development Co., which is developing the 184-acre office park. Ground breaking for the hotel is scheduled for September, with completion set for July.

Marriott has opened its fourth Courtyard by Marriott moderately priced hotel in California at 3002 S. Harbor Blvd., Santa Ana, just north of the San Diego (405) Freeway. The Santa Ana Courtyard is one of 165 hotels nationally either open, under construction or under contract. An additional Marriott Courtyard hotel is scheduled to open in Bakersfield in November. The Washington, D.C.-based Marriott chain also owns Courtyard sites in Palm Springs and Torrance.

The Torrance City Council unanimously approved construction of a three-story, 149-room hotel in the Park Del Amo project that will be known as the Marriott Courtyard hotel. It will cater to business travelers rather than the public. City official said the hotel, on Sepulveda Boulevard about 1,000 yards west of Crenshaw Boulevard, will have little impact on traffic in the busy area because it will not have a full-sized restaurant, banquet or convention facilities that might attract residents.

Marriott International Inc. said profit in its fiscal third quarter rose 12% to $96 million, or 36 cents a share, matching estimates, as the biggest U.S. hotel operator opened new hotels and raised room prices. The owner of the Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Courtyard hotel chains also said it will buy back as many as 10 million shares of its stock, about 4% of the total outstanding. Revenue rose 11% to $2 billion.

In line with a $3-billion allotment for national expansion of its Courtyard hotels, Marriott has additional Courtyard hotels under construction in Southern California, in Torrance, Palm Springs and Bakersfield. Marriott plans to open a total of 12 to 14 Courtyard hotels in the area over the next three to five years. Hotels are open at 2000 E. Mariposa Ave.

A 32-year-old man died after leaping from the 14th floor of the Hyatt Regency Irvine on Thursday, and authorities have ruled the death a suicide. Two people saw the man jump about 4:30 p.m. as they were preparing for an Orange County Business Council gathering in the hotel's lower pool courtyard, hotel officials and guests said. "They were about 40 feet away," General Manager Rod T. Schinnerer said.

The Grand Way, a $150-million mixed-use development incorporating a pair of high-rise office towers, a hotel and retail center, has begun construction in El Segundo, about 1 1/2 miles from Los Angeles International Airport. Located at Grand Avenue and Continental Boulevard, the project's first phase will include a 14-story office tower, retail pavilion and a 216-room Compri hotel. This will be the first large mixed-use project in the El Segundo area.

The Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport opened last week with a splashy outdoor party and an introductory offer of $179 a night for a limited time. The four-story Marriott property on Maui has 138 rooms and is the first Courtyard-style hotel on the island. The deal: The hotel is close to Kahului Airport and offers free shuttle service to and from. Guests also receive free Wi-Fi, business center access and access to the pool and gym.
