Re "For 4 Hours, Polite Driving Pays," March 29: I was puzzled by this story [describing an undercover officer posing as a pedestrian]. Having recently attended traffic school, the issue arose of when it is permitted for a vehicle to cross a crosswalk when a pedestrian is present. All sorts of answers--only when the pedestrian is on the curb; only when the pedestrian has reached the center divider; when the pedestrian is still crossing the opposing traffic; when the person is 10 feet away--were rejected by the instructor.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has inadvertently stepped into - or should we say, driven into - L.A.'s jaywalking ticket controversy. On Tuesday, the mayor was being driven to City Hall when his official car, a black SUV, struck a pedestrian on Second Street near Spring Street. The woman in her 60s was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The mayor was on the phone at the time and apparently didn't see the accident. The collision comes a few weeks after the Downtown News first reported on a jaywalking crackdown in the city's Historic Core and the Financial District, in which Los Angeles police officers are ticketing walkers who step into the street during the “countdown.” What many walkers (including me)

Regarding the article on the Sagebrush Cantina and Calabasas (View, Sept. 18) I would like to add my sincerest support to the concern of our neighbors and friend, Ms. Florence Gadbois of Parkway Galleria. Ms. Gadbois expressed what has become of late the consensus that Calabasas Road needs a crosswalk or two in this immediate area because of the terrific amount of foot traffic. We do agree for several reasons, not the least of which is our concern for the safety of our patrons who visit our neighbors' shops before and after they have dined with us. Calabasas Road traffic will continue to be an irritation as our community grows and prospers, but we stand ready to assist, to support and to respond in any effort to ease the problem.

A crackdown on jaywalking has stirred up a fierce debate over when you can and cannot cross the street in Los Angeles. A Downtown News story last week reported that Los Angeles police officers have been ticketing jaywalkers in the city's historic core and the financial district. Penalties range from a hefty $190 to an even heftier $250. "We're heavily enforcing pedestrian violations because they're impeding traffic and causing too many accidents and deaths," Lt. Lydia Leos told the newspaper.

More than nine times out of 10, U.S. drivers know when to use their horns. But on most other written driving quiz questions, it was an epic fail. CarInsurance.com, which has been offering drivers advice about car insurance and how to shop for it since 2003, recently polled 500 drivers ages 18 and over on questions found on typical written driving tests. Of those polled, 44% scored less than 80% on the 20-question quiz. CarInsurance.com says that 80% or better is usually required to pass a written driving test.

In the wake of criticism about the safety of the new Expo Line, transit officials are installing more warning signs and precautions for pedestrians and motorists at 21 street crossings along the light-rail route. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to spend $287,500 to improve crosswalks, pedestrian warning signs and traffic signals from Washington Boulevard and Flower Street to Jefferson and Hauser boulevards. Among the safety enhancements are more fencing, louder train horns and, under certain circumstances, speed restrictions of 15 mph at stations.

SAN FRANCISCO — The bicyclist was zipping south on Castro Street at the end of his twice-weekly ride to the Marin Headlands, blowing through red lights and stop signs. But the Market Street crosswalk was filled with pedestrians, and Chris Bucchere, 36, allegedly was riding too fast to stop. So he aimed for the least populated spot and plowed on through. "In a nutshell, blammo," a blogger purporting to be Bucchere wrote that March day. The man he hit, Sutchi Hui, 71, died four days later.
