Cal State Northridge got back on the winning track Monday night, breezing past Oral Roberts, 72-59, in a nonconference game before 793 at the Matadome. The Matadors (3-2) took an 8-6 lead and never trailed, building a 17-point advantage in the second half. For Northridge, the victory followed a 97-88 overtime loss at San Luis Obispo on Saturday night after which Coach Bobby Braswell criticized his team's effort. After watching videotape of the game Sunday, Braswell offered a different opinion.

Heather Mactavish, an All-Sunset League catcher from Huntington Beach High, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Cal State Northridge. Mactavish is playing this summer for the California Raiders, one of the top 18-and-under Amateur Athletic Union teams in the nation.

Mike McClintock of Golden West College has signed a letter of intent with the Cal State Northridge men's track and field team. McClintock, a graduate of Riverside Poly High School, finished second in the men's javelin in the State junior college championships last month and has a personal best of 210 feet 3 inches.

Led by All-American Angela Brinton and outside hitter Anna Garcia, Cal State Northridge won the Portland State women's volleyball tournament on Saturday. CSUN, the runner-up in the 1986 NCAA Division II championships, won the two-day, five-team round-robin tournament by defeating No. 7-ranked Portland State, 10-15, 15-5, 15-7, 15-3.

Craig Hewitt had 31 kills and five blocks and Oliver Heitmann added 24 kills and eight blocks to lead the Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team to a 15-13, 10-15, 15-6, 15-12 victory at Loyola Marymount in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Tuesday night. The Matadors (10-7, 6-5) also got 17 kills and six blocks from Jason Hughes. The Lions fell to 5-12, 4-7.

A meeting scheduled for Friday between Cal State Northridge administrators and officials from the Los Angeles Clippers professional basketball team has been postponed until later this month, said Eliott Minninberg, a CSUN administrative vice president. Minninberg cited a conflict of schedules for the change of plans. On the agenda were informal talks regarding the Clippers' use of an arena that has been proposed for construction on the Northridge campus.

Bob Burt, the winningest coach in Cal State Northridge football history, resigned to accept the head coaching position at Temescal Canyon High in Lake Elsinore. Burt ends his collegiate career with a 55-50 overall record, including a 49-46 record in nine seasons with the Matadors. Northridge was 7-13 the last two seasons as a Division I-AA team. Burt came to Northridge after the 1985 season from Cal State Fullerton, where he had served for six years as defensive coordinator.

Cal State Northridge needed only one inning Thursday to finish off Lewis University in the NCAA Division II baseball World Series. The Matadors scored eight times in the eighth inning and right-hander Vale Lopez made it stand up as Northridge advanced into the national championship game, 8-6. Northridge's opponent will be the winner of today's game between the University of Tampa and Jacksonville (Ala.) State. Through seven innings, Lewis (49-14) was well on its way to defeating Northridge.

Texas Christian 83, Cal State Northridge 65: Edvinas Ruzgas scored 24 points and made five of the Horned Frogs' 12 three-point baskets in a first-round game in the West bracket of the preseason NIT at Tempe, Ariz. Ruzgas tied his career high in points and three-point baskets as TCU (2-0) extended its streak to 343 games with a made three-pointer. Foul trouble has plagued the Matadors, who lost to No. 9 Oregon, 86-77, in their last outing. Six Northridge players scored in double figures. Cal State Northridge is poised to sack football, a move that not only would end 40 years of college play in the San Fernando Valley, but also create a void for local high school and junior college players who prefer to continue their careers close to home. The Matadors play their season finale at Portland State on Saturday, and University President Jolene Koester has said she will decide by Thanksgiving if that will be Northridge's final game.

Jon Horwitz doubled twice and Glendale College defeated Riverside, 9-5, in a Southern California regional baseball game Saturday at Riverside. Glendale (32-10), seeded No. 6, advanced to today's final of the four-team, double-elimination tournament. Riverside (38-7), seeded No. 3 and the defending state champion, defeated Cerritos, 5-1, in an elimination game on Saturday and needs to defeat Glendale twice today to advance to the second round next weekend. The first game is at noon.

This time, Markus Carr made the basket. And Cal State Northridge made good on Coach Bobby Braswell's prediction. Carr's off-balance 17-foot jump shot with 2.2 seconds to play lifted Northridge to an 86-84 victory over Eastern Washington before 2,971 Thursday night at Reese Court, giving the Matadors their first Big Sky Conference regular-season title and the right to host the conference tournament next week.

It looked like another game was about to unravel for Cal State Northridge Friday night. Freshman point guard Andre Chevalier was tripped, stripped of the ball and San Diego scored to take its biggest lead of the game. But Chevalier scored on a driving layup on the Matadors' next possession, igniting a second-half run that gave them their second win of the season, 83-73 over the Toreros. The victory kept Northridge undefeated at Matador Gymnasium.
