Al Jazeera America made its debut on Aug. 20, and the first week of ratings are in. And they're pretty darn low. According to TV Newser, the highest-rated show on the station, which replaced Current TV, was the Thursday airing of "Real Money With Ali Velshi. " The program drew 54,000 total viewers, which is fewer than Al Jazeera America's Twitter audience of 75,000. The channel's launch drew just 22,000 people, which is below the threshold which Nielsen claims it can report viewers.

Cross Al Jazeera off the list of potential suitors for the Tennis Channel. The Qatar-based media giant was mentioned by the New York Post in a story last week as wanting to buy the Tennis Channel. However, a senior executive with knowledge of Al Jazeera's U.S. media strategy is adamant that there is no such interest in the Tennis Channel. The executive declined to speak on the record because the company did not want to officially comment on idle speculation regarding a financial transaction.

Former Vice President Al Gore is used to taking pot shots from the right, and he's getting peppered with them lately following his decision to sell his unpopular Current TV network to Al Jazeera, the Middle Eastern news channel still vilified by many conservatives as the voice of the Taliban. Gore doesn't have much trouble dismissing that canard -- Al Jazeera's international coverage has in recent years become competitive with the best in the world -- but the grief he's getting from the left clearly makes him a lot more uncomfortable.

AMMAN, JORDAN - The Arab world's best-known satellite TV network purchased the American cable channel Current TV last week. That means you may soon be able to add "Al Jazeera America" to your remote control favorites. If you're a news junkie like me, you should tune in. The network, founded 15 years ago in the Qatari capital of Doha, has forever improved TV news, especially in the Middle East. Before Al Jazeera, many Arabs could watch only state-owned and -run television stations that primarily broadcast official images of one esteemed leader or another, usually holding court at his palace, often to the background sound of classical music.
