The 30th Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade starts at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. This spoof of the Rose Parade bills itself as "Pasadena's other parade." What started out years ago as a joke in a Pasadena bar will commemorate its 29th anniversary Sunday. Pasadena's Doo Dah Parade, a parody of the city's more famous event that happens each year on New Year's Day, has become world famous in its own right for its wild and wiggy style.

EVENTS Ring in May Day with Linoleum Bonaparte, the Goddess of Democracy, Clown Doctors from Outer Space and perennial faves the Bastard Sons of Lee Marvin (not to mention hundreds of other marchers) at the 34th Annual Pasadena Doo Dah Parade . Rerouted this year from Old Town to a new path along Colorado Boulevard in East Pasadena, the parade — conceived in the now-defunct Chromo's Tavern in 1978 — will be led by Grand Marshall Corky Peterson, Chromo's proprietor.

Roll over, Rose Queen. Pasadena's Doo Dah Parade, which for 13 years has showcased the city's non-conformist side, is going electronic. Under a three-year exclusive contract signed Friday, KCOP Channel 13 announced it will broadcast live footage of the Doo Dah, an annual spoof of the 101-year-old Tournament of Roses. The parade is held the Sunday after Thanksgiving in Old Pasadena.

This year's Doo Dah Parade will not be held until next year, according to an announcement on the event's website. The annual parade through Old Town Pasadena, founded more than three decades ago as a spoof of the Tournament of Roses, has been postponed until Jan. 20, the announcement said. The event has traditionally been held Thanksgiving weekend. No reason was given for the change.

After 17 years, Doo Dah founder and organizer Peter Apanel has decided to step down and hand over the alternative parade to The Light-Bringer Project, a Pasadena nonprofit arts group. Apanel announced his decision on Monday at the International Festivals Assn. meeting in Anaheim. Apanel, who has run the parade as a full-time job, could not be reached for comment.
