Don't expect any sort of defensive overhaul as USC prepares for its home opener Saturday night against Virginia. Coach Lane Kiffin watched his team give up nearly 600 yards in the Trojans' season-opening victory Thursday at Hawaii. Then he came back to Los Angeles and viewed it all over again, this time in taped detail. "You don't want to jump and make any big conclusions off one game and start changing all the things you believe in," Kiffin said Sunday. Kiffin would like nothing more than for quarterback Matt Barkley , tailback Marc Tyler and the rest of the offense to keep playing the way it did in the 49-36 victory, especially with freshman tailback Dillon Baxter due to make his debut after sitting out the opener because of a suspension.

Tupou, a senior, will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee. Tupou was injured in the second half of the scrimmage when he made a cut and his knee buckled without being touched, the school said. "It's unfortunate that it happened, but I'm OK," Tupou said in a statement. "I'll deal with it. It's part of the game.

Greater San Diego has been fertile recruiting ground for USC, producing Heisman Trophy-winning running backs Marcus Allen and Reggie Bush . Now comes freshman Dillon Baxter . It's too soon, of course, to know how Baxter's Trojans career will play out. But the early enrollee put on a show during USC's scrimmage on Saturday, scoring on a spectacular 50-yard run that left several defensive players on the ground grasping helplessly...
