A man apparently shot himself to death on the "X" in Dallas' Dealey Plaza that marks the spot where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated 40 years ago, authorities said. Witnesses said they saw a man in a camouflage jacket holding a gun on his chest and lying in the middle of the street on the spray-painted "X," an unofficial memorial maintained by the publisher of a local conspiracy theory publication. A witness said it initially appeared that the man had been struck by a vehicle.

Two fugitives released one hostage only to take another before fleeing authorities who have been tracking them for four days. The inmates, Bob Leach, 38, and Gerald Gantt, 45, left hostage Joyce Silvius at a home they had broken into, then abducted a second woman from the house, police said. The fugitives belong to a gang of five inmates who escaped Thursday from the Grayson County Jail, about 60 miles north of Dallas. Police have so far captured three of the men.

An assistant police chief and a deputy police chief from the San Diego Police Department are two of 13 semi-finalists for the job of Dallas police chief. The city of Dallas released the list Friday, which includes Assistant Chief Norm Stamper and Deputy Chief Manuel Guaderrama. Stamper, 46, is second in command to Police Chief Bob Burgreen and runs the day-to-day operations of the 1,850-member department.

A Dallas police officer was killed by a suspect he was chasing on foot, authorities said. Officer Brian Jackson and another officer went to investigate a disturbance complaint and chased a male suspect through alleys and between houses, Police Chief David Kunkle said. During the chase, the man fired at the officers, fatally wounding Jackson, Kunkle said. The suspect, Juan Lizcano, 28, was charged with one count of capital murder and was in custody.

An off-duty Dallas police sergeant was shot and killed by police early Sunday as he brandished a gun and tried to enter his home after an argument with his wife, authorities said. Sgt. Glenn Repp III repeatedly ordered Sgt. Larry Wise to drop his gun before both men opened fire, authorities said. Neither Repp nor his partner were hit. Wise's sister-in-law, Brenda Smith, had called police, saying Wise had made threats.

A Dallas man who police say ended a day of drinking by forcing his 6-year-old son to shoot him in the head died of his injuries, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Ronald Moore, 42, was struck in the head by a bullet Easter Sunday when he ordered the boy to shoot him with a .22-caliber pistol, Dallas police said. Relatives told police Moore had become despondent and aggressive after drinking vodka for most of the day.
