Gary Owens' voice is not the only new one KFI (AM 640) listeners will hear in the months ahead. Joining the radio station next Monday will be Mike Nolan, formerly of KOY-AM in Phoenix, Ariz., who will be the traffic reporter. He replaces Bruce Wayne, who was killed in an airplane crash June 4. Joining Owens, who takes over the 6-to-10 a.m. slot Sept. 8, will be former KFWB (AM 980) news anchor Dan Avery.

I got more useful information from the letters published (Sept. 6) on the review of "The Last Tsar" than I did from Edvard Radzinsky's book. Thank you. The idea that the Romanov dynasty died with Peter III is correct. The Russian people have been deceived all these centuries and probably have not known it. The fact that these German and Danish rulers perpetuated an empire that included non-Russian subjects (Ukrainians, Poles, Balts, etc.) should be condemned even at this late date.

Ohio University made 17 of 21 free throws in the final 2:13 to preserve an 85-76 victory over No. 14 Connecticut on Wednesday night in the Big Island Invitational at Hilo, Hawaii. Geno Ford scored 22 points and Gery Trent added 19 for Ohio (7-3). Connecticut (7-1) tied the score, 2-2, but trailed the rest of the game. "We tried to catch them down the stretch. We fouled them, but they hit the shots," Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun said. "They stood up to us."
