Tournament MVP David Dischner scored in the 33rd minute and Hector Orellana scored with 14 seconds remaining as Cal State Fullerton defeated host Loyola Marymount, 3-1, to win the Loyola Marymount men's soccer tournament Sunday. The Lions took the lead seven minutes into the game with a goal from Arturo Torres, who dribbled around three defenders and got a shot past Titan goalkeeper Sean Rockwell.

Brad Aspey scored on a direct kick nine minutes into overtime as UC Irvine defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 2-1, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer game Sunday at San Luis Obispo. After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs (4-8-1, 2-2) took the lead on Johnny Cummins' seventh goal of the season in the 49th minute, but UC Irvine (8-5-1, 1-0-1) responded two minutes later when Lawrence Smalls scored off a pass from Jon Spencer.

Larissa Carter Volleyball The UC Irvine women's volleyball team evened its Big West Conference record at 2-2 behind the play of Larissa Carter, a sophomore outside hitter from Fountain Valley High School. Carter had 19 kills and 17 digs in the Anteaters' victory over Cal State Fullerton Saturday. Both were career highs. THIS WEEK Cross-country: Christy Villa continued a string of impressive performances.

Ty McGregor scored three touchdowns and Billy Condon scored two to lead host Whitworth College to a 49-22 victory over Chapman Saturday in Spokane, Wash. Chapman (0-2) opened the third quarter with a touchdown by Greg Garand, who caught an eight-yard pass from Stan Villanueva. Whitworth answered with a touchdown by Joel Robnett, who returned the kickoff 100 yards, breaking three tackles, for a 35-14 lead. Villanueva completed 13 of 22 passes for 194 yards and had one intercepted.

UC Irvine split two games Saturday at the Northern California men's water polo tournament in Stockton and will play a fifth-place semifinal against Long Beach State today. Fifth-ranked Stanford stopped No. 2 Irvine's five-game winning streak with a 6-5 victory. Jeff Guyman and Peter Osborn scored fourth-quarter goals to lead the Cardinal. Dan Hayes had two goals and Hipp had 11 saves for the Anteaters. UCI (11-4) opened the tournament with a 16-6 victory over UC Davis.

UC Irvine's Ted Newland and UCLA's Sean Kern were named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo coach and player of the year. Newland led the Anteaters to a 20-7 record. He has a record of 663-288-5 in 35 seasons at Irvine. Kern, a senior, had 29 goals in 15 games for the Bruins, who won the conference tournament. Irvine's Dan Klatt, Jeff Powers and Dan Hipp were named to the first team.

UC Irvine was in a familiar position Friday night at the end of the first quarter in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo tournament at the Los Alamitos Reserve Center. The top-ranked Anteaters were tied, 1-1, with Stanford. "Sometimes it takes a goal from the other team, or maybe we are down a goal at the end of the first quarter to make us realize that we have to get going and play harder," Irvine goalkeeper Dan Hipp said.

California didn't just stop UC Irvine's two-meter attack Saturday night, it suffocated it. The underdog Bears used an extended defense on the perimeter and a tough double team in the hole that led to a 9-7 overtime victory over the top-ranked Anteaters in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo tournament at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center. Fourth-ranked California (16-8) plays UCLA in today's 6:30 p.m.

Fifth-ranked UC Irvine staved off a fourth-quarter rally by second-ranked California to win a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo game, 5-4, Saturday at Cal. Senior Dan Klatt scored with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give Irvine (7-3, 2-1 in conference) a 5-1 lead. But Cal (6-4, 2-1) rallied and drew to within one with 37 seconds to play. Goalie Dan Hipp made nine saves and Jeff Powers and John Dorfi each had two goals for Irvine.

The UC Irvine men's water polo team enters Saturday's Southern California tournament, which features the top 12 ranked teams in the nation, with a couple of big notches already on its belt. The fifth-ranked Anteaters (2-0, 1-0) opened the season Saturday by upsetting top-ranked UCLA, 9-7, in overtime. Then they began Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Sunday with a 13-7 victory over No. 9 UC Santa Barbara. It's too early to tell, but this team could be special, Coach Ted Newland said.
