Here's something that could make some NFL fans feel old: Dan Marino is a new representative for the American Assn. of Retired Persons. The Hall of Fame quarterback who turned 50 last September has been appointed the AARP's “Men's Life Ambassador” and will share his thoughts on a variety of topics, including health, fitness, sports, lifestyle, entrepreneurship and community service. He'll use the organization's website, www.aarp.org , as his primary means of speaking to men ages 50 and older about those issues.

Thirty years ago this week, the NFL teetered on wobbly legs. It was coming off the 1982 player strike, Raiders owner Al Davis had just successfully sued the league for the right to move his team to Los Angeles, the USFL was poaching players -- including Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker -- and John Elway, who would be selected No. 1 overall in the draft, was threatening to play for the New York Yankees if the Baltimore Colts used the first pick...

If you were the greatest quarterback in the history of a team, would you welcome perhaps the greatest quarterback of all-time to come to that team and maybe make you the second-greatest quarterback in team history? If your name is Dan Marino, you would. Marino, the former Miami Dolphins quarterback, says if Manning has any questions about playing for the Dolphins, he would gladly answer them. He has enough people "working with him to help him make the right decisions," Marino said Thursday, but if Manning asks, "I would definitely answer.

The Miami Dolphins unveiled their new logo Wednesday, part of a redesign to give the team a fresh look next season. The Dolphins have also designed new uniforms, but those won't be unveiled until April 25. The new logo features a more realistic looking Dolphin, and he's not wearing a helmet anymore. (That was the best part of the old logo.) PHOTOS: Super Bowl logos through the years However, probably the two biggest names in Dolphins history tweeted their approval of the new look.

The following is a blog documenting two Los Angeles Times editors' attempts to lose weight. It all began on Jan. 10 . Want to completely disrupt work for an hour?  Easy.  Just ask who is the greatest quarterback of all time.  Try it.  Whatever ‘s pressing will be put off.  Whatever ‘s urgent can wait.  (Don’t try this in an operating room).  And everyone’s got an opinion. You can easily reel off 10 QBs and get in a fistfight over the question within minutes.   But there is at least a consensus over most of the names you’ll hear.  Dan Marino, John Elway, Joe Montana and Bubby Brister will always be mentioned.  And they should be.  Growing up in the Rocky Mountains region, I thought Elway was the savior.  Just like my friends in Florida were convinced that Marino was a living god.   Let’s just give them both deific categorization for now.  Marino gets an extra point, however, because I’m following his lead in weight-loss strategy.  Although I’m not joining him in Canton, I can equal the NFL great on another field: dumping the excess tonnage.

Times NFL columnist Sam Farmer had a lot to say about this season's group of rookie quarterbacks during Thursday's NFL Slam with Mark and Sam, telling former radio personality Mark Thompson that this year's batch compares favorably with the group drafted in 1983. "There are three Hall of Fame quarterbacks taken in the 1983 draft," Farmer said. "John Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino. "While it is wildly premature to make comparisons, this draft could be as good a draft as in 1983, if not better.

The Miami-Dallas game included perhaps the most watched pregame this season. You can just hear the local radio/television broadcasters giving the play-by-play of the meeting between Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones. Johnson near the 40 . . . he picks his way through a few reporters and players. . . The crowd is getting think now as Johnson drifts toward midfield, he stays composed, slicks down the hair. He eyes Jones, Johnson leans, extends his hand . . . YES THERE IT IS.

Twenty-nine years ago, representatives from each NFL team — there were 28 at the time — gathered for the draft in the ballroom of a Sheraton hotel in New York City. No hoopla. No fans with painted faces. Hardly any media. "It was nothing, a gathering of people," recalled Dave Goldberg, who covered the NFL for the Associated Press for 26 years. "There were all sorts of hangers-on from local television who would show up at dinner time for the free food. Other than that, nothing.

Slump? What slump? Ask Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino what's wrong with his passing this season, and he will act as though the question is meant for someone else. "I think I've been doing fine," Marino said by telephone from Miami. "I'm just not putting up the same numbers as in the past." Whether Marino really believes these words is something only he knows. Certainly they will come as a surprise to anyone who has observed him in 1988.

Hard to imagine, but Raider quarterback Rich Gannon once flirted with the idea of giving up pro football to become a lawyer. Fifteen years later, as he inches toward NFL history, Gannon faces 12 angry men every Sunday. That would be the opposing defense, plus a defensive coordinator ready to hammer-throw his headset into the upper deck. "Rich drives you crazy," said Jim Mora, San Francisco's defensive coordinator. "He presents tremendous problems.

Key: Brett Favre completed a career-high 88% of his passes for 213 yards and four touchdowns, and the Vikings delivered their best all-around performance of the season. It was Favre's 22nd game with at least four touchdown passes, passing Dan Marino. Vikings said: "Getting back to that confidence that I had when I didn't know any better, that was pretty good. And I'm feeling more confident. I'm more of a realist at this age, but that doesn't mean you can't go out there and turn it loose."

How can you pass on this story? Today during Green Bay's game at Minnesota, Packers quarterback Brett Favre could establish an NFL record for touchdown passes in a career. He and Dan Marino are tied with 420. Miami Herald columnist Greg Cote wrote that this might be the biggest record in pro football but added: "Barry Bonds' besting Hank Aaron in all-time home runs would have been a major, riveting story with or without the steroid cloud adding controversy.
