Aimee McDaniel, who led Brea-Olinda High School to the Division III state championship last season and was named the state Division III player of the year, has signed a letter of intent to attend Pepperdine on a basketball scholarship, Brea-Olinda Coach Mark Trakh said Thursday. Tammy Blackburn, McDaniel's teammate at Brea-Olinda, has signed to attend San Diego State, Trakh said. McDaniel, a point guard, averaged 16 points a game last season.

The problems that plagued the Kings early in the season returned in Saturday night's 5-4 loss to the New York Rangers. After falling behind, 2-0, early in the second period, the Kings hurt themselves every time they tried to make a comeback by giving up goals to the Rangers. "They scored some big goals at ideal times," King winger Craig Johnson said. "Even though the Rangers played [Friday], they showed great speed."

The 12-day Olympic break made Scott Gomez's goal-scoring drought seem even longer. Gomez scored twice, Canada's gold medal-winning goalie Martin Brodeur made 21 saves and the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers, 4-3, Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Gomez scored the game-winner at 10:36 of the third period when he sliced across the crease and tapped in a pass from Bobby Holik. It was his first goal since Jan. 10.

After two seasons of worry and doubt, Tammy Blackburn decided enough was enough. In January, 1987, the Brea-Olinda guard underwent surgery to correct a curvature of her spine. Another operation followed in April to fix a chronic dislocation in her left shoulder. As a result, she was forced to sit out her freshman season. Even though Blackburn recovered from her operations and started on the basketball team as a sophomore, she struggled to overcome the mental side effects.

It might be tough for girls' basketball teams in Orange County to match last season's playoff performances, but this year's crop of athletes might have the talent to keep pace. Enjoying their most successful season ever last year, Orange County teams won three Southern Section titles. Brea-Olinda won the 3-A championship, Katella the 4-A and Valencia the 4-AA.

Patrick Roy stopped 26 shots for his sixth shutout this season and Radim Vrbata and Rob Blake scored as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-0, Saturday at Columbus, Ohio. Roy registered his 58th career shutout. He is 8-1-1 in his last 10 starts. The Blue Jackets were shut out for the third game in a row, stretching their scoreless streak to 195 minutes and 21 seconds, the longest in the franchise's two seasons. Colorado is unbeaten in eight games (7-0-1).

Mayor-elect Richard Riordan's short-term strategy of using reserve officers and police retirees to quickly expand the Los Angeles Police Department's patrol force will be an early test of his ability to move his agenda of change at City Hall. Details of the Riordan plan are still being developed, but aides say it is a top priority for the mayor-elect's transition committee. "There will be (a plan) and it will be soon," said Daniel Blackburn, a transition team spokesman.
