When I was a child, I knew real darkness. At my family's cabin on a Minnesota lake, I knew woods so dark that my hands disappeared before my eyes. I knew night skies in which meteors left smoky trails across sugary spreads of stars. But now, when 8 of 10 children born in the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way, I worry we are rapidly losing night's natural darkness before realizing its worth. The dark and twisty hit novel "Gone Girl" is taken to task by the best practitioner of dark literary arts, Mary Gaitskill, in this fall's Bookforum -- puzzlingly, about 15 months after the book's publication. "I can see millions more stars than people that live in the city," said Argo, who lives 20 miles southeast of Palmdale.

"Dream Homes in Bungalow Heaven" (Feb. 4) by Laurie Schenden, was an apt title for the fantasy depicted in the story. Not only are these "homes" tiny, dark and decrepit-looking, but the entire district is indistinguishable from some of the most blasted areas in South-Central L.A. The incredible thing is not why anyone would want to live there, but why they would spend the $300,000 (not the slightly over $200,000 mentioned in the article),...
