Every time The Times quotes Darryl Strawberry, it's difficult not to yuk it up. Maybe Darryl's back would heal faster if he quit putting the tension on it required to stick his foot in his mouth. MICHAEL HANNIN Woodland Hills

What's going on here? Jim Abbott pitches a no-hitter and has to share headline space with Darryl Strawberry's latest brush with the law? Give true heroes like Abbott all the space they deserve and put the Strawberrys of the world on the crime page, or better still, in the wastebasket. DENNIS MARR Downey

Who is the Dodgers' biggest free-agent lemon over the past 15 years? Is it Don Stanhouse, Dave Goltz or Darryl Strawberry? At least Stanhouse and Goltz tried to contribute. On the other hand, Strawberry left his bat and love for the game in the Big Apple. THOMAS LITTLEFAIR Long Beach

Am I reading this correctly, or do I need to drink more coffee this morning to wake up? The article about Darryl Strawberry testing positive for cocaine says he's on probation for prior drug offenses and he has to be tested at least twice a week. He still uses cocaine, even though he's going to get tested. Maybe I'm not the one who needs the coffee to wake up. CRAIG SCHLICHT, Glendora I see that poor Darryl Strawberry has been caught doing drugs again. He'll probably receive another lifetime suspension and so it could be late April before baseball reinstates him. JOHN PAUL WHITE, Moreno Valley I'm wondering if all the people clamoring for the Braves to release John Rocker are going to be pressuring the Yankees to dump Darryl Strawberry.

Lisa Strawberry filed for divorce from New York Mets outfielder Darryl Strawberry, citing irreconcilable differences after four years of marriage. In her Superior Court petition, Lisa Strawberry seeks sole custody of the couple's two children, Darryl Jr., 3, and Diamond, 11 months. The children are currently living with their mother in Altadena. The pair separated Wednesday, according to the petition. Lisa Strawberry filed for a legal separation in January 1987, accusing her husband of violent behavior and of breaking her nose after a National League championship seriesgame.

I hope young people are paying attention to the Darryl Strawberry case. People like Darryl Strawberry (or Robert Downey Jr., etc.) have more willpower, discipline and determination than most of us can even imagine in order to get to the tops of their fields. And yet, once the drugs take hold, all of that willpower, discipline and determination mean nothing. I'm sure there are some young people out there today thinking about trying drugs, and they're saying to themselves, "If I start to get hooked, I can always stop."
