Dave Dombrowski dropped out of the Dodger general manager derby after agreeing to a five-year, $5-million contract extension Wednesday to remain at the helm of the Florida Marlins. The Marlin general manager was the leading candidate for the Dodger position, baseball sources said. Dombrowski, 42, was scheduled to meet with Chase Carey and Peter Chernin--co-chief executives of Fox Group's parent company News Corp.--in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

It's beginning to look like the best course of action for the Angels this off-season is to do as little as possible. Unless the Florida Marlins are on the phone. The Angels would be better off doing nothing than making some of the head-shaking moves other teams made this week. I still would like to see them make a strong run at Houston free-agent pitcher Darryl Kile, but Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi said Thursday you can pretty much rule that out.

Trade rumors turned into reality Friday with Todd Stottlemyre, Royce Clayton and Todd Zeile going to the Texas Rangers and Juan Guzman, Willie Blair, and Ellis Burks also switching teams. But as the non-waiver trading deadline of midnight EDT approached, all of baseball was still waiting and watching for one big deal: Would the Seattle Mariners move Randy Johnson? The New York Yankees, Cleveland and Atlanta were said to be pursuing the 1995 AL Cy Young winner.

Right-hander Dennis Martinez agreed today on a three-year, $9.25-million contract with the Montreal Expos. Martinez, 35, was 10-11 with a 2.95 earned-run average for the Expos in 1990 and was selected to the All-Star team for the first time in his career. The new contract replaces the final year of a two-year extension signed before the 1990 season.
