Dave Dombrowski joined the expansion Florida Marlins as general manager Thursday after three years at the same position with the Montreal Expos, where he was both praised and criticized for his aggressive approach to the job. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Dombrowski, 35, said after a news conference at Joe Robbie Stadium, which will be the Marlins' home when they field their first team in 1993. "The opportunity to put together something from scratch just doesn't happen."

It's beginning to look like the best course of action for the Angels this off-season is to do as little as possible. Unless the Florida Marlins are on the phone. The Angels would be better off doing nothing than making some of the head-shaking moves other teams made this week. I still would like to see them make a strong run at Houston free-agent pitcher Darryl Kile, but Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi said Thursday you can pretty much rule that out.

Trade rumors turned into reality Friday with Todd Stottlemyre, Royce Clayton and Todd Zeile going to the Texas Rangers and Juan Guzman, Willie Blair, and Ellis Burks also switching teams. But as the non-waiver trading deadline of midnight EDT approached, all of baseball was still waiting and watching for one big deal: Would the Seattle Mariners move Randy Johnson? The New York Yankees, Cleveland and Atlanta were said to be pursuing the 1995 AL Cy Young winner.

Right-hander Dennis Martinez agreed today on a three-year, $9.25-million contract with the Montreal Expos. Martinez, 35, was 10-11 with a 2.95 earned-run average for the Expos in 1990 and was selected to the All-Star team for the first time in his career. The new contract replaces the final year of a two-year extension signed before the 1990 season.
