Nick Ramirez represented the tying run and then, one foul popup later, he didn't. Just like that, the Cal State Fullerton baseball team's season came to an end Sunday in an NCAA regional. Held to one run and one hit through five innings, Illinois (30-26) scored six runs late, including three in the eighth inning, and beat the Titans, 7-5, at Goodwin Field. "We jumped out to a 4-1 lead, and they kept clawing back," Fullerton Coach Dave Serrano said. "We let them hang around enough and we left the door cracked open enough for them to come back.

UC Irvine had an opportunity to claim an important Big West Conference series victory against Cal State Fullerton and give first-year Coach Dave Serrano a triumphant return to the place where he helped lead the Titans to their fourth national championship last season. But the Anteaters made enough mental mistakes in the first six innings Sunday to derail themselves and the second-ranked Titans capitalized when the miscues turned physical.

Big-game jitters and big fly balls spoiled UC Irvine's debut in the College World Series on Saturday, when it lost to Arizona State, 5-4, at Rosenblatt Stadium. Irvine pitcher Scott Gorgen, who had given up only one earned run in his previous 37 innings, gave up three home runs against the power-loaded Sun Devils -- the first time this season he had given up more than two. The crucial blow came in the eighth inning when Ike Davis blasted a leadoff home run to right field to break a 4-4 tie.

"He put up some good numbers as a relief pitcher this summer in the Cape Cod League, and the Phils went after him," Titan pitching coach Dave Serrano said.

UC Irvine used a three-run eighth inning Monday to secure a 9-6 victory over top-seeded Texas and earn its first berth to a Division I super regional. A pair of errors proved to be the difference for the Longhorns (46-17), who were playing in front of a partisan crowd in Round Rock, Texas. After reaching on a fielding miscue by Texas first baseman Chance Wheeless, Bryan Petersen scored from first on Dillon Bell's single when right fielder Kyle Russell overthrew third base.
