Pat Haden, USC's athletic director for less than seven days, made his first major coaching change Monday, firing baseball coach Chad Kreuter. Frank Cruz, a volunteer assistant the last two seasons after 12 years as coach at Loyola Marymount, will serve as interim coach for the 2011 season. USC has won 12 College World Series titles, more than any other school. But the Trojans have not participated in the NCAA tournament since 2005. "On my first day on the job at USC last week, I said one of my goals was to return the USC baseball program to national prominence," Haden said in a statement released by the school.

Cal State Fullerton could not wait for another shot at Minnesota in an NCAA baseball regional at Goodwin Field. Fourth-seeded Minnesota already had beaten the top-seeded Titans, upsetting Fullerton two days earlier in the opening game of the double-elimination regional. A 7-2 victory Sunday night earned Fullerton a championship-game showdown against the Golden Gophers on Monday. "They're much more impressive than any four seed, probably, in the country," Fullerton Coach Dave Serrano said Sunday afternoon after his team earned a rematch with Minnesota by eliminating New Mexico, 11-3.

Big-game jitters and big fly balls spoiled UC Irvine's debut in the College World Series on Saturday, when it lost to Arizona State, 5-4, at Rosenblatt Stadium. Irvine pitcher Scott Gorgen, who had given up only one earned run in his previous 37 innings, gave up three home runs against the power-loaded Sun Devils -- the first time this season he had given up more than two. The crucial blow came in the eighth inning when Ike Davis blasted a leadoff home run to right field to break a 4-4 tie.
