Golden West College scored 12 runs in the first three innings then held off a late Orange Coast rally for a 16-12 victory in a South Coast Conference baseball game Tuesday at Orange Coast. The teams combined for 31 hits, including a grand slam by Keith Kaub that sparked Golden West's seven-run third inning. Orange Coast scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it close.

Sophomore Scott Wilkinson of Cerritos College was named the South Coast Conference's Player of the Year in a vote of conference coaches. Wilkinson, a transfer from Santa Ana College, hit .417 for the SCC-champion Falcons with 10 home runs and a conference-leading 54 RBIs. Cerritos led all schools five players on the all-SCC first team. First-year coach was also voted Coach of the Year.

Long Beach State kept alive its hopes of winning a share of the Big West Conference title Saturday night when the 49ers staged an eighth-inning comeback and defeated Cal State Fullerton, 8-6, at Blair Field in Long Beach. Long Beach (36-19, 15-8 Big West) moved to within a game of Fullerton (37-18, 16-7), with their season finale today at 1 p.m.

UC Irvine had an opportunity to claim an important Big West Conference series victory against Cal State Fullerton and give first-year Coach Dave Serrano a triumphant return to the place where he helped lead the Titans to their fourth national championship last season. But the Anteaters made enough mental mistakes in the first six innings Sunday to derail themselves and the second-ranked Titans capitalized when the miscues turned physical.

Cal State Fullerton earned the No. 5 national seeding and Long Beach State will be the host of one of the nation's toughest regionals, the co-Big West champions learned Monday when the NCAA unveiled the 64-team college baseball tournament bracket. Fullerton (37-19) will open play against Rider (29-26), champion of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Friday at Fullerton, in a regional that also includes UCLA (31-25) and Virginia (38-21).

Big-game jitters and big fly balls spoiled UC Irvine's debut in the College World Series on Saturday, when it lost to Arizona State, 5-4, at Rosenblatt Stadium. Irvine pitcher Scott Gorgen, who had given up only one earned run in his previous 37 innings, gave up three home runs against the power-loaded Sun Devils -- the first time this season he had given up more than two. The crucial blow came in the eighth inning when Ike Davis blasted a leadoff home run to right field to break a 4-4 tie.

Pinch-hitter Kevin Evert's two-run single in the top of the seventh inning Saturday broke a scoreless tie and led Cerritos College to a 4-0 win over Laney in a semifinal game of the state championship tournament in John Euless Park. The top-seeded Falcons (38-5) will play College of the Canyons for the state title this morning at 11.

Brandon Duckworth, expected to be back as one of Cal State Fullerton's top starting pitchers next season, has decided to pass up his senior year and has informed Titan Coach George Horton that he will sign a pro contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. "He put up some good numbers as a relief pitcher this summer in the Cape Cod League, and the Phils went after him," Titan pitching coach Dave Serrano said.

UC Irvine used a three-run eighth inning Monday to secure a 9-6 victory over top-seeded Texas and earn its first berth to a Division I super regional. A pair of errors proved to be the difference for the Longhorns (46-17), who were playing in front of a partisan crowd in Round Rock, Texas. After reaching on a fielding miscue by Texas first baseman Chance Wheeless, Bryan Petersen scored from first on Dillon Bell's single when right fielder Kyle Russell overthrew third base.

Arizona State showed its strength on offense in the first round of the NCAA baseball regional at Fullerton Friday, but Texas Tech Coach Larry Hays was disappointed by his team's pitching. "Arizona State did a good job, but we never were able to get an edge in pitching," Hays said. "Our pitching wasn't good enough to win." The result was a 12-3 Arizona State victory. The second-seeded Sun Devils broke up a tie game with a nine-run seventh inning.
