The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television is getting a $6-million gift from David C. Copley, publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune. It will be used to endow a costume design chair at the school. "The artistry of costume designers has long been a vital part of storytelling in the cinematic and performing arts and deserves significant scholarly attention," Copley said in a statement.

David C. Copley, chairman, president and chief executive of Copley Press Inc., which publishes the San Diego Union-Tribune and eight other dailies, has undergone a heart transplant and is "recovering rapidly," his office announced Friday. In a letter to employees, the 53-year-old Copley said he underwent the surgery June 20 at Sharp Hospital, where surgeons "did a magnificent job." The family-owned Copley Press publishes newspapers in California, Illinois and Ohio.

At the San Diego Union-Tribune, they recall how publisher Helen K. Copley would stride into her Monday morning meetings with the newspaper's editorial board, regal and clearly the woman in charge. In tow, usually several paces behind her, shuffled David C. Copley, her shy, overweight son. The young newspaper executive often wore his wraparound sunglasses. Only rarely did he speak.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego has received a contribution of $3 million from David C. Copley toward the facility's expansion project in downtown San Diego. The David C. Copley Building, a three-story contemporary structure designed by Gluckman Mayner Architects, will open in 2006 and will feature a 130-seat lecture hall and adjacent terrace, education program spaces, art handling and art preparation spaces, staff administrative offices and a board conference room.
