David Dotson, a second-year freshman tailback who gained 48 yards in nine carries Sunday against North Carolina, came to USC with impressive stats. At Valley View High in Moreno Valley, Dotson set five California high school records. As a senior during the 1991 season, Dotson ran for 3,544 yards, averaging 10 yards per carry and scoring 46 touchdowns. In one game, he ran for 507 yards in 27 carries.

Record-setting running back David Dotson of Valley View High in Moreno Valley, who rushed for 507 yards in one game last season, has made an oral commitment to USC. Dotson said he chose USC over Colorado and Arizona and will sign a letter of intent with the Trojans on national signing day, Feb. 5. "It basically came down to USC and Arizona and I wanted to be a little closer to home," said Dotson, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior.

David Dotson of Valley View High in Moreno Valley rushed for 507 yards against Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World Friday night, setting the CIF State single-game record. Dotson, a senior, carried the ball 27 times and scored eight touchdowns in leading the Eagles to a 56-0 victory in a Southern Section Sunkist League game in Moreno Valley. The previous record was 501 yards set by Ryan Knight of Riverside Rubidoux in a game against Corona in 1983.

David Dotson broke the state single-season rushing record and tied another mark as Valley View High of Moreno Valley routed La Sierra, 49-14, in a Sunkist League game Friday at Moreno Valley High. Dotson gained 215 yards in 18 carries in the first half, but only played on special teams in the second half. He broke the record of 2,713 yards, set by Santa Monica's Glyn Milburn in 1987, on a two-yard gain on his 11th carry.

Deputy Police Chief David Dotson, the Los Angeles Police Commission's services coordinator, has been named an assistant chief of police. A 27-year veteran, Dotson replaces Assistant Chief Marvin Iannone, who retired this month to become chief of the Beverly Hills Police Department. Police Chief Daryl F. Gates has yet to make known which of the three assistant chief positions Dotson will fill.
