Going Home to Glory A Memoir of Life With Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969 David Eisenhower with Julie Nixon Eisenhower Simon and Schuster: 324 pp., $28 David Eisenhower's touching memoir of his grandfather's final years raises an uncomfortable issue for 21st century Republicans. If Dwight D. Eisenhower were alive today, he'd very likely be drummed out of the Republican Party, unless he were prepared to renounce his firm belief in a "dynamic center in national politics" that included support for Social Security and the principle of government intervention in economic affairs, "policies Eisenhower had regarded as vital and had supported under Roosevelt and Truman," his grandson writes.

David and Julie Eisenhower shared memories of life in the White House during the Nixon and Eisenhower years at the St. Jeanne de Lestonnac Auditorium in Tustin on Thursday. A crowd of about 200 attended their talk, one of four in the Celebrity Series presented by the Crescendo Chapter of the Guilds of the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

In a tent in a parking lot, a Little League coach and a guy who "never made the team" announced their picks Wednesday for the all-time all-star baseball team. It cost $200 to get inside to hear about it. The day after Major League Baseball's own All-Star game, former President Richard M. Nixon and son-in-law David Eisenhower revealed their all-star picks to a $200-a-plate luncheon at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda. It was a gala lineup. The last batter to hit .400.

The description dogs him, a kind of family brand. It's a label that sticks, follows him everywhere, like "tall," "blue-eyed," "jug-eared" or (increasingly, these days) "thin-haired." "Ike's grandson," Publishers Weekly called him right up front, in the first two words of the first major review of "Eisenhower at War 1943-1945."

September 21, 1986 | W. W. Rostow, Rostow, professor of political economy at the University of Texas at Austin, worked in London as a strategic target planner in 1942-1945 and has written, among others, "Pre-Invasion Bombing Strategy" and "The Division of Europe: 1946" (University of Texas Press).
The author of this book is the son of John Eisenhower, soldier-diplomat and military historian; grandson of the soldier-President; and son-in-law of Richard Nixon. The author turned to his grandfather's career as "a kind of refuge" when the Watergate crisis came to its climax in 1974. Twelve years later, this book emerges as the first of three volumes on "The Eisenhower Years."

Julie Nixon Eisenhower and David Eisenhower will appear at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Civic Arts Plaza as part of the center's Distinguished Speaker Series. Julie Nixon Eisenhower is the daughter of former President Richard M. Nixon and David Eisenhower is the grandson of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. They are expected to speak about growing up in such a political environment and to offer anecdotes from their past, as well as perspective on the history of the U.S. presidency.

Even by the standards of the Nixon White House, the plan to blow up Washington's preeminent think tank seemed crazy, presidential counselor John W. Dean III recalled here Monday. But there was White House aide John Ehrlichman on the phone one day in 1971, telling Dean that "Chuck Colson wants me to firebomb the Brookings [Institution]." Describing the incident Monday to several hundred presidential history junkies at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, Dean said he was dumbfounded.
