David Garrard must really hate the week leading up to the start of the NFL season. For the second year in a row, it appears the veteran quarterback will be released five days before his team's opening game. Last year, it was the Jacksonville Jaguars; now it's the Miami Dolphins. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer tweeted Monday afternoon: "Just got a text from David Garrard that he is being released from Fins today. " Around the same time, Garrard posted a Twitter message of his own that seemed to confirm the report: "To all the dolphins fans thx for ur support!

A sleeper pick by many New York Jets fans to become the team's starting quarterback next season was David Garrard. Looks like that isn't happening. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported via Twitter on Wednesday that Garrard told two Jets players he no longer planned to be with the team. According to NFL.com's Adam Schein, Garrard sent him a text message Wednesday that said "Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do. " Associated Press reported later that a person familiar with the decision said Garrard plans to retire because of lingering knee issues.

Mark Sanchez, sporting long locks secured with a stylish soccer-style headband, took the high road on Thursday when he spoke to members of the media for the first time since the NFL draft, during which the New York Jets drafted West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round. When asked about the upcoming weeks heading into a new season, Sanchez replied "no doubt" and "sure, of course" when asked if he'd be the starting quarterback. With the Jets having cut Tim Tebow, there are five quarterbacks on the team's roster: Sanchez, Smith, recent free-agent signee and former Jacksonville Jaguars starter David Garrard, third-year pro Greg McElroy and Matt Simms, a rookie who the team cut before last season but brought back in December on a reserve contract.

David Garrard appears to be the answer in Miami. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the question was, "What quarterback do you sign when all your other choices have gone elsewhere?" That's not a slam on Garrard, who signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins on Monday and was told he'd be able to compete for the starting job. The nine-year veteran who has spent his entire pro career with the Jacksonville Jaguars could end up being a great pickup for the team if fully recovered from back surgery last October.

Key: Late to the field before the game and after halftime while taking painkilling injections for his broken ribs, Matt Hasselbeck threw four touchdown passes, two of them to T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and the Seahawks rolled to their biggest home shutout in 25 years. The injury-riddled Seahawks were still missing seven starters, including three-fifths of their offensive line. Seahawks said: "Guys were giving me chest bumps pregame. I should have worn a sign." -- Hasselbeck Jaguars said: "Just a terrible day, terrible performance by all of us."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville's inconsistency appears to be a thing of the past. Its struggles against division rival Houston might be too. David Garrard threw two touchdown passes, Maurice Jones-Drew had 260 all-purpose yards and the Jaguars thumped the Texans, 37-17, for their fourth consecutive win. Jacksonville (4-1) got a rare rout against the team that has caused it the most headaches in recent years.

The Philadelphia Phillies' Chase Utley will probably start the season on the disabled list for the second straight year because of problems with both knees. The five-time All-Star second baseman left camp to see a specialist, and it's uncertain when he'll be ready to play. Utley was believed to have only an injured right knee, but General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. indicated Monday the left one may be causing more trouble. Utley hasn't played in a game this spring because of his condition, which forced him to sit out all of last spring and the first 46 games of the regular season.

Cleveland's Colt McCoy is one of a host of young quarterbacks who are light on experience but heavy on potential. They all want to realize the type of early success that Baltimore's Joe Flacco, Atlanta's Matt Ryan and the New York Jets' Mark Sanchez have experienced. Five of the young guns to watch: Andy Dalton, Cincinnati: Carson Palmer's refusal to return to the Bengals set the stage for Dalton, a former Texas Christian standout, to step in and play. Dalton has the added pressure of getting no off-season to learn first-time NFL offensive coordinator Jay Gruden's system.

As AFC South rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans know each other very well. Question is, how well do they know themselves? When the Jaguars play host to the Titans on Monday night, which Jacksonville quarterback will show up? In the Jaguars' three victories, David Garrard had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 8-1, but in his team's two losses that ratio was 1-5. Are the Jaguars the team that scored three points in a home loss to Philadelphia, or the one that scored 31 on the same field the next week in a victory over Indianapolis?
