NBC executives appear to have settled on David Gregory to succeed the late Tim Russert on the Sunday morning powerhouse "Meet the Press," according to a source familiar with internal discussions. During a period of intense deliberations in the last few weeks, the network considered various internal and external candidates, and even contemplated bringing in multiple anchors to moderate the 61-year-old program.

"Meet the Press," the predominant political forum on television, entered a new era Sunday as NBC announced that David Gregory will take the helm of the program, six months after the death of longtime moderator Tim Russert. The selection of Gregory, NBC's chief White House correspondent, was no surprise, having leaked out days ago after weeks of speculation. Interim host Tom Brokaw confirmed the news at the end of Sunday's show, introducing Gregory as a "great friend and cherished colleague."

NBC Political Director Chuck Todd, who was considered a contender to succeed Tim Russert as moderator of "Meet the Press," has been given another plum assignment: chief White House correspondent. Todd, who will continue serving as NBC's political director, will be the network's lead correspondent covering the Obama administration, the network announced Thursday. He will be joined on the beat by Savannah Guthrie. Todd replaces David Gregory, who was named earlier this month as the moderator of "Meet the Press."
