Has the balance of power in late-night TV shifted yet again? CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" has beaten NBC's "Tonight Show" in viewers and the key demographic groups for the first time since Jay Leno returned to the latter program in March. Last week, Letterman averaged 3.8 million viewers, compared with 3.6 million for Leno, according to figures published Thursday by the Nielsen Co. In adults ages 18 to 49, the group most sought by the majority of advertisers, Letterman averaged a 1.0 rating/4 share, compared with a 0.9 rating/4 share for Leno.

Whoops -- looks like Lindsay Lohan won't be doing David Letterman's Top 10 list after all. The troubled actress, arraigned earlier this month on a grand-theft charge for allegedly lifting a $2,500 necklace, was announced as a Thursday guest on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman. " But looks like the Letterman folks got had. After breezing through a battery of TV interviews Sunday with hardly a revealing moment, President Obama finally let out some fresh information Monday night on the "Late Show with David Letterman." He let slip a few personal details about his daughters, an off-limits topic elsewhere. He disclosed the name of a movie he saw recently with his wife. And he managed to talk a little about healthcare and Afghanistan too. The information wasn't exactly breaking news, but the president has been busy hammering home an old message about the overhaul of the healthcare system.

The eye infection that kept David Letterman from hosting his "Late Show" on CBS this week was caused by shingles, his doctor said. The condition is a viral infection of the nerve roots that typically results in pain and rash. It's caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. "Dave is on his way to a full recovery," said Dr. Louis J. Aronne. "Late Show" will be in reruns next week.

After confessing to America that his breakdown was a put-on, Joaquin Phoenix went on late-night television to explain why he did it. Phoenix and "I'm Still Here" director Casey Affleck made separate late-night appearances this week to come clean about the elaborate prank that had the Oscar nominee leaving behind acting for hip-hop. That move resulted in Phoenix making a bizarre, zoned-out appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman" in February 2009 as well as in the recently released faux- documentary "I'm Still Here," which chronicles the alleged breakdown.
