A former San Fernando Valley civic leader who was married to two women simultaneously has been convicted of murdering his wife in Florida during a confrontation over his double life. David R. Miller, 42, former president of the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce and founder of the San Fernando Valley Leadership Foundation, faces 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced in February, said Steve Plotnik, assistant state attorney in Seminole County, Florida. In his Granada Hills office, David Russell Miller surrounded himself with reminders of the things that meant the most to him. A fixture at civic and business functions across the San Fernando Valley, the former Chamber of Commerce president covered a wall in his office with the photos of the important people he knew and had met. There was the governor, local assemblymen, international figures such as Oliver North, even Desmond Tutu. But there was no photo of his wife, Dorothy.

Practices have been canceled for much of the week at USC as players take their final exams, but that doesn't mean basketball has fallen completely by the wayside. "We didn't have practice for a few days but still we're working hard on individual stuff," forward Sam Clancy said. "I need to be in the gym every day." Amateur footage of CBS anchorman Dan Rather talking to sailors in the boiler room of the carrier Independence was offered to other networks, but there were no takers. "I thought it was shabby," NBC foreign editor David Miller said of the tape's quality. Rather was among network correspondents on the aircraft carrier Monday as it steamed in the Gulf of Oman. The rules of the press pool required CBS to share the footage that a sailor took of Rather as he explored the ship and interviewed crewmen.

An American diplomat in Panama was reportedly detained by police while observing an anti-government rally in which one protester was killed and five were wounded, rally organizers and the U.S. Embassy said. Information was being sought on the detention and whereabouts of David Miller, an embassy economic adviser who was watching the demonstration, embassy spokeswoman Cynthia Farrell said.
