David Soliz barely can cultivate a good growth of stubble on his 22-year-old chin. Even when he does, each milestone victory by the Camarillo American Legion baseball team forces the first-year coach to go from bearded to baby-faced. Three times Soliz shaved his whiskers as a show of celebration as Camarillo made its way to this weekend's state tournament in Yountville. Camarillo (33-5) will play San Jose (26-20) on Saturday in the opening round of the six-team, double-elimination tournament.

The prosecutor in a freeway shooting death said Tuesday that the victim apparently was murdered solely because he made an obscene gesture to some gang members. The first details in the death of 19-year-old Richard Gill came out during a Municipal Court hearing at which one of the three men accused of murder attempted to have his bail reduced. Judge Harvey Hiber refused to lower a $1-million bail for 24-year-old David Soliz, who faces murder charges along with two brothers in the Aug.

Eric Raba of Camarillo High allowed only one hit and no runs in three innings Saturday to spark the Ventura County All-Stars to a 7-5 victory over West Side of Los Angeles at Ventura College. Raba, who picked up the win, pitched the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Troy Dunlap of Culver City was the only batter to reach base against Raba, singling in the sixth. "I felt good," said Raba, who was 5-4 with a 3.16 earned-run average during the season.

Mike Lieberthal forfeited his chance to play for the South team in the Ventura County All-Star baseball game the moment he signed a Philadelphia Phillies contract last week. Lieberthal helped lead Westlake High to a 28-2 record this season and Coach Rich Herrera had hoped the catcher would be in the lineup when the all-star game begins today at 1 p.m. at Ventura College. Herrera, who is co-coach of the South along with Agoura's Gary Gray, is understanding, however.

David Soliz knows full well the proud tradition of Rio Mesa baseball. He's been part of it much of his life. That's why it was difficult for the first-year Spartan coach to deal with a string of losses early in the season. Soliz and his brother, Steve, played at Rio Mesa a decade or more ago with the likes of Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dmitri Young and triple-A first baseman Mike Mitchell. Steve, in fact, is in triple-A himself, catching for the Las Vegas Stars in the Pacific Coast League.

Trailing Buena High by seven runs Tuesday, in a baseball game matching teams tied for first place in the Channel League, Rio Mesa found it difficult to be patient. Yet Coach Rich Duran simply gnawed his upper lip and advised the Spartans to follow form. "I told the kids we needed to just peck away and stay within our game," Duran said. "We didn't need to go out there and start swinging for the fences."

An Encanto gang member was convicted of first-degree murder Monday in the shooting death of a freeway motorist killed with a shotgun blast while the victim's horrified father looked on. After deliberating for about three days, a Superior Court jury convicted Edward Estrada, 19, in the Aug. 29, 1990, shooting of 19-year-old Richard Gill. The same panel also acquitted Estrada's brother, 20-year-old Ramon, and a friend, 24-year-old David Soliz.
