Baseball's June draft begins today, a matter of vital interest to many Orange County players. But the fascination is gone for at least three. Terry Tewell of Cypress College, Gary Christopherson of Golden West and David Stevens of Fullerton College all signed minor league contracts last week. Each was drafted last June but didn't sign.

Oak Industries director Roderick M. Hills on Wednesday wrested control of San Diego-based Oak from Chairman E. L. McNeely, after an official tally showed that Hills' slate won an overwhelming victory at the company's June 6 annual meeting. Hills' five-member slate won 77% of the 53.5 million votes cast during the emotionally charged annual meeting, while McNeely's slate drew just 23%, according to Oak General Counsel Jim Miller. In addition, three representatives of MIM Ltd., a British firm that owns 25% of Oak's shares, also were elected to the board by overwhelming margins.

After three real estate agents, two price reductions and nearly a year with no offers on their town house in Las Vegas, George and Katherine Grodin turned to a higher power for help. They bought a 4-inch plastic figurine of St. Joseph -- the patron saint of home and employment -- and placed it upside down in their patio with hopes of breaking their home-selling slump. "I just felt so helpless," said Katherine Grodin, 47. "I needed to do something."

Though its demise drew little attention because of the partisan year-end brawl over the payroll tax cut extension in Congress, a key mortgage financing benefit disappeared at the end of December: the ability of large numbers of home buyers and owners to write off the premiums they pay for mortgage insurance. The loss of that tax deduction — plus mandatory new fees imposed by Congress on all new conventional and FHA loans — could effectively increase the costs of homeownership this year.

Guard Pete Bach of Fullerton High School, who averaged 19.6 points per game, was named the most valuable player of the Freeway League in a vote of the league's basketball coaches. Chris Burton, who led Fullerton to a league co-championship with Sunny Hills in his rookie season, was named coach of the year. Fullerton and Sunny Hills, both 9-1 in league play, each placed three players on the 11-man squad.

Waving an American flag and carrying picket signs with messages such as "This land is still our land," a small group of demonstrators marched in front of a ranger station Saturday to protest fees for use of the state's national forests. The Adventure Pass is a U.S. Forest Service program that since 1997 has charged visitors $5 a day, or $30 per year, to enter four Southern California forests.

Maurice Carter scored 24 points to lead J.W. North to an 83-57 victory over La Habra Wednesday in a first-round Southern Section 4-A playoff game at North. North (19-7) led, 19-15, at the end of the first quarter but the Huskies' pressure defense forced La Habra into numerous mistakes in the second quarter. The Highlanders (13-12) made seven turnovers in the second quarter, as the Huskies outscored them, 19-8, to take a 38-23 lead at halftime.
