Flashbulbs popped amid the roars as 14-year-old soccer prodigy Freddy Adu entered the game and became the youngest athlete to play in a major American league in more than 100 years. No one in the stadium sat for the next 10 minutes. People waited for magic that never came.

TORONTO -- The Galaxy will play D.C. United in the semifinals of soccer's SuperLiga tournament at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Home Depot Center. That pairing was confirmed Wednesday night when the eight-team tournament's final two first-round games were played. At Robertson Stadium in Houston, the Dynamo defeated D.C. United, 1-0, in front of 11,013 on a 50th-minute goal by U.S. national team forward Brian Ching. The victory earned Houston first place in Group B.

Nor was John Harkes, who was born in 1967, the last time Los Angeles and Washington met in a soccer game with a championship on the line. Today, on what promises to be a storm-wracked afternoon, the Los Angeles Galaxy plays D.C. United at Foxboro Stadium in MLS Cup '96, the grand finale to the first Major League Soccer season.
