One of the big open secrets of contemporary EDM is that many, many DJs just aren't doing that much onstage. Whether picking super-obvious mainstream tracks, using oversimplified beat-matching software or even just playing a pre-mixed set and drunkenly fist-pumping, today's digital-centric DJs have myriad ways to cut corners in the booth. Las Vegas clubs are especially susceptible, with huge easy paychecks for artists playing to tourist crowds who just want to keep the bottles flying.  Over at radio.com, Scott T. Sterling notes that one new Vegas club, After, has posted its house rules for DJs, and it amounts to a provocative 95 Theses for modern EDM venues.

Deadmau5, who does a decent job of amping up the crowd at his concerts, is now stirring up the blogosphere by saying that all DJs do at live concerts is show up and click a “play” button. "I just roll up with a laptop and a midi  controller and 'select' tracks [and] hit a spacebar," the Toronto DJ wrote Saturday in a blog post on his site titled "We All Hit Play. " This can be interpreted as blasphemy for several reasons. If all DJs do is press play, how do they justify the million-dollar fees that some top electronic dance music names command?

Deadmau5 and DJ Idris are among the headliners of an event Thursday night in Los Angeles to celebrate the midnight launch of Microsoft's Xbox One video game console. The party will take on the trappings of a film opening, with celebrities walking the carpet (which, in this case, is Xbox green, not red) and guests attending an invitation-only party at Milk Studios. The Hollywood focus fits Microsoft's marketing strategy for the game system, which it describes as an entertainment hub. "When you think about what the console is, it's much more of an all-in-one platform than just a gaming console," said Phil Spencer, vice president of Microsoft Studios.

Can't say I didn't give it my best," she said Saturday in the first of a series of tweets on the breakup. "Man, I sure was wrong. But at least he made it a no-brainer to break that off. #lessonlearned. Now, we can get all of the 'I told you so's' outta the way ... And move on. " And for those who had no idea what or whom the 30-year-old was talking about?

The images were grainy, the lines obscured — as if they were photos taken by a surveillance camera. The backdrop appeared to be a giant boombox, but maybe it was just speakers on scaffolding. Lights added halo glares but didn't illuminate. A V-shaped podium sat center stage. Only the telltale rounded mouse ears behind this gizmo station identified the shots: No, not leaked drawings of the latest Disneyland attraction or a Takashi Murakami art project, but mockups of the stage set for the Coachella performance of Canadian geeky beat king deadmau5, who will headline the Sahara Tent Friday night.

Jay-Z may be watching the throne, but Beyoncé has daughter Blue Ivy wearing the crown - or at least appearing to, in one of several totally cute pics the happy mom has posted on her Tumblr blog. Blue Ivy's fluffy cream dress, mom's foot in the tot's tiny shoe, the 1-year-old with a sparkling silver-and-purple crown positioned jauntily on her head. They're all adorable, but Ministry's fave is the one where little Blue Ivy reaches up to touch her smiling mama's nose. Kat Von D's wedding plans are sunk - and that's a good thing. The tattoo artist and her electronic-musician fiance, Deadmau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman), are leaving the traditional white wedding far behind and choosing an underwater vibe instead for their nuptials. The couple apparently both love and are drawing inspiration from the 1926 H.P. Lovecraft story "The Call of Cthulhu," Von D told People on Monday (As best we can tell from a very quick read , it's about a powerful ancient creature that is part man, part octopus and part dragon and lurks in an ancient city beneath the sea)

"Sound Shapes" is in many respects a traditional video game, some may even say old-fashioned. Users control a character, in this case a ball, and move it left to right or top to bottom across a screen. Simple enough. Except dig a little deeper and it becomes clear that "Sound Shapes" is not a traditional game at all. It can even be argued that "Sound Shapes" in an instrument masquerading as a game. Released Tuesday as a downloadable game via Sony's PlayStation Network, "Sound Shapes" contains original music from local pop eccentric Beck and EDM star Deadmau5, among others, and invites users to shred the songs, piece by piece, and then reassemble them to create a music-based universe.
