This is the 12th post in a series focusing on this year's free-agent class. Player: Delonte West Former team: Dallas Mavericks Type of free agent: Unrestricted Positives: The Lakers reportedly expressed interest in West before the beginning of last season, in hopes his 6-foot-3 frame and feisty play could help both their backup and point-guard spots. The Lakers don't need such help anymore at point guard since acquiring Steve Nash, but the team still lacks a definitive shooting guard to play behind Kobe Bryant.

Delonte West didn't really give Gordon Hayward a "wet Willie" Monday night. That would have been gross. Luckily for Utah's Hayward, there didn't appear to be any saliva involved when West poked him in the ear during the Jazz's 123-121 victory over Dallas. So, instead of gross, the move by the Mavericks guard was simply immature. And thuggish. And despicable. And bewildering. Feel free to add your own adjective. After the game, West insisted that Hayward had lint in his hair and he wanted to give him a “wet Willie.” But, West also admitted, “I forgot the NBA is a gentleman's game.” The bizarre move earned the Dallas Mavericks guard a technical foul but no ejection.

Paul Pierce never planned to leave Boston when he opted out of the final year of his contract. He just wanted to help the Celtics find him some teammates. "I never thought once about leaving the Celtics," Pierce said Thursday when the team announced he had signed a four-year deal. "I wanted this team to get better, knowing we didn't win a championship. … Also, I wanted to ensure that I had a chance to retire as a Celtic." Since losing the NBA finals in seven games to the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston re-signed Ray Allen , who will be 35 on Tuesday, to a two-year contract and gave free agent center-forward Jermaine O'Neal , 31, a two-year deal.

The NCAA on Thursday announced plans to expand its men's basketball tournament from 65 to 68 teams -- and a new, $10.8-billion broadcasting deal with CBS and Turner Broadcasting that will allow every game to be shown live. The three-team expansion is far more modest than the 80- and 96-team proposals the NCAA outlined only a few weeks ago at the Final Four. The new format will be in place next year, though exactly how it will work still needs to be ironed out by the Division I men's basketball committee.

Wild East. As I like to say every season at this time, thank heavens that's over! Oh, not quite yet? In any case, having looked at the Never Wilder, or At Least As Balanced, West, we turn to the new Big East, which any of eight teams could win too. Well, give or take five or six of them. No one should carp if the East has two powers. It's two more than the early 2000s, when the Nets made consecutive Finals with win totals of 52 and 49. This could be the second time the Finals open in the East since 1997, the next-to-last season for the Michael Jordan Bulls.
