Throwing football speculators for a loop, the Raiders made a trade Monday that did not involve Marcus Allen, Bobby Hebert, the San Francisco 49ers, Steve Beuerlein or Vann McElroy. Instead, they sent reserve cornerback Dennis Price to the New York Jets for linebacker Alex Gordon in what amounts to a swap of injury reports. Price spent the last two weeks on the team's practice squad after a four-week stay on injured reserve with a chest injury.

Looking for an early favorite in the all-important Transfer of the Year Award? We humbly submit the name of Brent Price. For starters, think where Oklahoma would be without the point guard extraordinaire. Or where South Carolina might be with him. Ranked 11th, Oklahoma depends on Price to run its score-at-will offense and to bomb away from the three-point line. He is averaging 25 points a game and has made 45% (36 of 80) of his three-point shots.

The Raiders are close to signing their No. 1 draft choice, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown, sources said Wednesday. First guess is that Brown, from Notre Dame, will sign a $3-million contract for 4 years. Brown was the sixth player selected overall, but a contract that big would put him second to Aundray Bruce, the linebacker who was taken first in the draft by the Atlanta Falcons and signed for $4.1 million over five seasons.
