First the grocery stores, then the banks. Now, the final frontier: weekend hours for the state Department of Motor Vehicles. That's what San Diego Democratic Assemblywoman Lucy Killea has demanded in a bill she has co-authored that would force the DMV to try out Saturday service for one year at 16 of its 147 offices. Killea predicted that her bill, currently awaiting approval by the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, will be approved by the Legislature.

San Francisco County Supervisor Angela Alioto, who drives a Lamborghini, ran up $573 worth of parking tickets between last Nov. 15 and this Feb. 7, according to city and state records. Alioto claims at least some of the tickets were incorrectly issued to her 15-year-old sports car. She says she was out of town on days some of the tickets were written and added, "Nobody drives my car but me." Alioto, daughter of former San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, said she will challenge the state Department of Motor Vehicles, keeper of vehicle records.

I, as a bona fide law-abiding and tax-paying citizen, would like to register a complaint: Why do our police not enforce the law concerning proper registration of vehicle license plates? If drivers do not have valid license plate stickers, you can probably assume that they don't have the required auto insurance coverage either. If these scofflaws were denied the privilege to drive on our freeways and streets, it might reduce the congestion. It is a strange coincidence, but such persons are also the worst drivers--or at least the most reckless.

Four men were arrested Tuesday afternoon in an alleged bribery and counterfeiting scheme at two state Department of Motor Vehicles offices, authorities said. The four men, two of them DMV clerks, allegedly provided driver's licenses to individuals without them having to take written and on-the-road tests, according to Rudy Fimbres, a supervising special investigator for the DMV's Southern California special operations unit.

Effective July 1, l987, Assembly Bill 2610 entitles California licensed drivers age 55 and over to premium discounts on liability, medical payments and collision coverage if they take a state approved mature driver improvement course every three years. The statewide incentive program which effects all automobile insurance companies, is designed to improve driving skills and promote road safety for older adults. Discounts will depend on a person's driving record and insurance carrier.

Four felony charges will be filed today against a former hearing officer for the state Department of Motor Vehicles who has admitted accepting money and sex in exchange for allowing negligent drivers to keep their licenses, an official said Tuesday. Michael R. Tarrish, 47, of Artesia is to appear today in Los Angeles Municipal Court to answer one charge of bribery, one of corrupt misconduct and two of filing false documents with the DMV.
