It was a year ago that trainer Doug O'Neill's fortunes began to turn, by a nose, at the Santa Anita Derby. He hopes to duplicate that magic this weekend. His horse, I'll Have Another, edged the favorite, Creative Cause, to win the Santa Anita Derby in 2012. A month later I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby, for O'Neill's first victory in a Triple Crown race. If anyone was happier last year than O'Neill after the Kentucky Derby, it was his then-9-year-old son, Daniel, who was promised a hot tub if O'Neill made it to the winner's circle.

The Bob Baffert-trained Flashback drew post position No. 1 for Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby and was installed as the 9-5 favorite in a nine-horse field. "I really don't like the one hole," Baffert said after Wednesday's draw for the 1 1/8-mile test. Flashback, a gray 3-year-old son of Tapit, finished second at Santa Anita in the March 9 San Felipe Stakes behind Hear The Ghost after getting into a speed duel with Goldencents. It has resulted in Baffert switching jockeys - Garrett Gomez will replace Julien Leparoux on Flashback.

What happens in a day at the roller derby? For one thing, scientists have discovered and reported Tuesday in the journal PeerJ , a lot of bacteria get swapped around. Researchers at the University of Oregon's Biology and Built Environment Center , a collaboration of architects and biologists who study how design affects the kinds of microbes that live among us, and how it influences our health, recently examined the microbiomes -- the ecosystems of thousands of microorganisms -- on the skin of three roller derby teams before and after a competition.

With the Kentucky Derby less than two months away, excitement and tension filled the Santa Anita paddock Saturday just before the running of the Grade II $300,000 San Felipe Stakes. Cameras were everywhere, and all eyes were on the two highly regarded 3-year-olds, Flashback and Goldencents. And their two jockeys, Julien Leparoux and Kevin Krigger, acted as if they were engaged in a match race soon after the start of the 1 1/16-mile race. Flashback, the even-money favorite, and Goldencents engaged in a speed duel, but when they reached the stretch, Hear The Ghost came charging from fifth place under jockey Corey Nakatani and overtook Flashback for a half-length victory.

Flashback and Goldencents, the West Coast's top two Kentucky Derby prospects, are set to face off Saturday in the Grade II, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes at 11/16 miles at Santa Anita. The eight-horse field is a final prep for the Grade I Santa Anita Derby on April 1. Flashback, trained by Bob Baffert, and Goldencents, trained by Doug O'Neill, are in post position Nos. 2 and 3. Flashback, a 3-year-old son of Tapit, is two for two, including a 61/4-length win in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Feb. 2. Goldencents, a son of Into Mischief, has earned $782,000, including winning the one-mile Sham Stakes by 11/2 lengths on Jan. 5. O'Neill is hoping for a second year of Kentucky Derby luck.

Horse meat in Ikea's meatballs? Sorry, Charlie (wait, that's tuna), but apparently the Swedish furniture giant is jockeying for position with Burger King, Nestle and Tesco in the tainted-meat derby. My colleague Tiffany Hsu reported Monday that inspectors in the Czech Republic had “found equine evidence in the chain's frozen meatballs. The affected product was sold as a packaged beef and pork item in more than a dozen European countries but not in the U.S.” Nay, you say?

Pat Derby could coax Willie the bear with a handful of jelly beans, make Christopher the cougar twitch his tail on command, and even kissed Rijo the tiger. But when it came to Walt Disney, she had less patience. Derby, a Hollywood animal trainer turned animal rights activist, once walked out on him in the middle of filming for "Disney's Wonderful World of Color" after he subjected her bear cub to two hours of retakes under the hot studio lights. She always got along better with animals than people, anyway, she often said.

It's barely February, so Bob Baffert isn't rushing to anoint Flashback as his top Kentucky Derby contender. The gray colt made a solid case for himself, though, winning the $196,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes by 61/4 lengths at Santa Anita in his 3-year-old debut Saturday. Baffert had a good day overall, with his 2-1 favorite Guilt Trip winning the $200,250 Strub Stakes by 11/2 lengths for owners Gary and Mary West, who also own Flashback. Baffert also won the first race on the card.

Horse racing is in need of a new star, and she emerged Saturday, wearing a bright yellow one on the front of her silks. Rosie Napravnik, a red-haired 24-year-old from New Jersey, is poised to make a strong challenge as the Kentucky Derby's first winning female jockey after directing Shanghai Bobby to a stirring Breeders' Cup Juvenile victory at Santa Anita. She is the second winning female jockey in Breeders' Cup history. Julie Krone rode Halfbridled to a 2003 Juvenile Fillies victory.

Furniture can often meld into the background the longer you have it around. In the case of my kitchen, one black bar table with four white chairs seemed like a good idea at one point. But now? Boring, boring, boring. Impressed with Kyle Schuneman's simple mods , I was looking for a way to change up this white bar chair. A punch of dip-dyed color - painting just the tips of the chair legs - seemed like it would do the trick and brighten the room. But why stop at explaining the step-by-step of my project?
