Deron Williams is staying with the Nets. The All-Star point guard said on his Twitter page Tuesday night that he "made a very tough decision today" and posted a picture of the new team logo that accompanies the Nets' move from New Jersey to Brooklyn. A person with knowledge of the decision said Williams told the team he was accepting their five-year contract worth $98 million. Williams, the top free agent available, chose to stay with the Nets over signing with his hometown team, the Dallas Mavericks.

City Council candidate Deron Williams, a top aide to Councilman Nate Holden, pleaded guilty to felony cocaine possession in Ontario in 1988 and spent 90 days in a rehabilitation center, he acknowledged Thursday. Williams, who was 20 at the time, spent three years on probation, according to court and probation documents. Shortly after the conviction, he began working for Holden when the councilman encountered him in a drugstore parking lot and offered him a job.

During his 1988 arrest for cocaine possession, City Council candidate Deron Williams was caught at the Ontario International Airport with plastic bags filled with drugs stuffed in his underwear as he and two acquaintances attempted to catch a flight to New Orleans, according to newly obtained court records. A police report of the incident disputes the description of the event Williams gave Thursday, when he said in an interview that he was holding a package for some friends when he was arrested.

San Bernardino County officials said Wednesday that Los Angeles City Council candidate Deron Williams served 117 days in County Jail after his 1988 cocaine conviction. Williams has characterized his sentence as 90 days in a rehabilitation center, but Wednesday he acknowledged that it was "a form of jail." "I went to the Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center," said Williams, who is the top aide to Councilman Nate Holden. "I did my time.... It was a horrible experience."

Deron Williams had 18 points and 15 assists, and the Utah Jazz increased its longest winning streak this season to six games by beating the Dallas Mavericks, 104-92, Monday night. Paul Millsap scored 25 points for Utah, which held Dallas scoreless for more than three minutes during an 11-2 run that put the Jazz in control in the fourth quarter. Dirk Nowitzki scored 28 points but had only two in the fourth quarter for the Mavericks, who have lost three in a row for the first time this season.

DENVER — With Utah running out of big bodies, Deron Williams carried an even bigger load in leading the Jazz to a 114-111 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday in Game 2 of their Western Conference playoffs. Williams had 33 points and 14 assists and Carlos Boozer added 20 points and 14 rebounds as the injury-riddled Jazz tied the series at a win each. Chauncey Billups' three-point attempt from the top of the key in the closing seconds hit off the back iron. Williams and Kyle Korver made two free throws each in the final 11 seconds to hold off the Nuggets.
