Andrew Bynum eased his way down the hallway inside Staples Center after the Lakers stirring, last-second 87-86, victory over the Clippers Wednesday night, his mind now on injured teammate Derrick Caracter. Caracter went down in the first quarter with a sprained left ankle, leaving the Lakers even more short-handed with big men because Bynum remains out while he rehabilitates his surgically repaired right knee and backup center Theo Ratliff remains out after left-knee surgery. Bynum, a 7-foot center, had already changed his timetable on when he might return to play, moving the date up. So he was asked if he felt any more pressure, now that Caracter is out, to return even sooner ?

So much for mending fences. Free-agent guard Raja Bell decided to sign with the Utah Jazz instead of the Lakers, accepting more money than the Lakers could have offered. Bell, 34, was supposed to meet with longtime adversary Kobe Bryant on Wednesday, but opted instead for a three-year contract worth a reported $10 million from the Jazz. The most the Lakers could have offered was $1.77 million next season, the remaining amount of their mid-level exception. The Lakers currently have nine players on their roster, not including two second-round picks who have played well on their summer-league team in Las Vegas — forwards Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks.

The Lakers have yet to pare down a short list of coaching candidates but one thing is certain. The winner of their coaching derby won't make anything remotely close to what Phil Jackson earned the last several years. Jackson topped out at $12 million in 2009-10 before taking a pay cut last season to about $10 million. The new Lakers coach can expect an annual salary of $3 million to $5 million, according to people who are familiar with what the Buss family is thinking.

There was another trade rumor involving the Lakers and the Denver Nuggets regarding Carmelo Anthony and a possible four-player deal, but a Lakers official, who declined to talk publicly, steadfastly denied it. It's a scenario that was circulating in parts of the Lakers' camp Wednesday: the Lakers trade Andrew Bynum and Ron Artest for forwards Anthony and Al Harrington. But the Lakers official denied it was ever on the table and insisted team executive Jim Buss and General Manager Mitch Kupchak are on the same page as far as trade opportunities.

David Beckham will reject the chance to make one final appearance for England, a person familiar with the former captain's plans said Thursday. Coach Fabio Capello said Wednesday that the 35-year-old Beckham was too old to continue playing competitively for England, but offered him an opportunity to say farewell to fans in an exhibition. Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles' tendon injury that denied him a trip to a fourth World Cup, has played 115 times for England, second to goalkeeper Peter Shilton on the country's all-time appearance list.

As Metta World Peace goes, so go the Lakers. Their second unit, anyway. He's been hit or miss this season, metta or messy, scoring 19 points one game but following it up a few days later with no points on 0-for-8 shooting. Lakers Coach Mike Brown made a move already at small forward, replacing Devin Ebanks with Matt Barnes in the starting lineup. He continued to have faith in World Peace. Brown likes him with the second unit because he can find his own shot there, no longer competing with Kobe Bryant , Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum for touches.
