Andrew Bynum eased his way down the hallway inside Staples Center after the Lakers stirring, last-second 87-86, victory over the Clippers Wednesday night, his mind now on injured teammate Derrick Caracter. Caracter went down in the first quarter with a sprained left ankle, leaving the Lakers even more short-handed with big men because Bynum remains out while he rehabilitates his surgically repaired right knee and backup center Theo Ratliff remains out after left-knee surgery. Bynum, a 7-foot center, had already changed his timetable on when he might return to play, moving the date up. So he was asked if he felt any more pressure, now that Caracter is out, to return even sooner ?

So much for mending fences. Free-agent guard Raja Bell decided to sign with the Utah Jazz instead of the Lakers, accepting more money than the Lakers could have offered. Bell, 34, was supposed to meet with longtime adversary Kobe Bryant on Wednesday, but opted instead for a three-year contract worth a reported $10 million from the Jazz. The most the Lakers could have offered was $1.77 million next season, the remaining amount of their mid-level exception. The Lakers currently have nine players on their roster, not including two second-round picks who have played well on their summer-league team in Las Vegas — forwards Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks.

The Lakers have yet to pare down a short list of coaching candidates but one thing is certain. The winner of their coaching derby won't make anything remotely close to what Phil Jackson earned the last several years. Jackson topped out at $12 million in 2009-10 before taking a pay cut last season to about $10 million. The new Lakers coach can expect an annual salary of $3 million to $5 million, according to people who are familiar with what the Buss family is thinking.

There was another trade rumor involving the Lakers and the Denver Nuggets regarding Carmelo Anthony and a possible four-player deal, but a Lakers official, who declined to talk publicly, steadfastly denied it. It's a scenario that was circulating in parts of the Lakers' camp Wednesday: the Lakers trade Andrew Bynum and Ron Artest for forwards Anthony and Al Harrington. But the Lakers official denied it was ever on the table and insisted team executive Jim Buss and General Manager Mitch Kupchak are on the same page as far as trade opportunities.

The Lakers made a trade Saturday, but it wasn't for Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. Two days after getting rebuffed by the NBA in an apparent deal for Paul, the Lakers sent forward Lamar Odom to Dallas for the Mavericks' first-round pick in the 2012 amateur draft. "It's a done deal," said a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly. Shannon Brown had suitors. Six of them or so. Some offered the free-agent guard more money than he might make if he returned to the Lakers. He thought about that. But in the two years Brown had spent in purple and gold, he won two rings. He thought about that too. Eventually, the idea of three in a row was too much to pass up, and the guard agreed to a two-year contract worth about $4.6 million to stay with the Lakers, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Thursday. "Obviously, the process took a while, but Shannon wanted to be here and they wanted him," Bartelstein said.
