Texas linebacker Keenan Robinson remembers last season's game against UCLA this way: "They took what we gave them. " The Longhorns gave a lot. UCLA rumbled for 264 yards rushing in a 34-12 rout at Austin. Johnathan Franklin led the way with 118 yards rushing and Derrick Coleman ran for 94, including a 29-yard touchdown. "My role is to go out and get tough yards and be physical," Coleman said. "That's what I did and that's what I'm about to do again. " Not so fast, Robinson said.

All running back Derrick Coleman wanted was one yard. He didn't get it. But he did take away a lesson from a goal-line stand by Stanford last month. UCLA got to the four-yard line on its first drive and came away with nothing. Coleman, a 5-foot-11, 240-pound senior, had two tries at scoring — a one-yard run came up one yard short and a third-down effort ended with him in the arms of three Cardinal players just shy of the goal line. "I didn't get in, that's all I remember," Coleman said.

The Clippers got their man Wednesday in the NBA draft when they selected Loyola Marymount guard Bo Kimble with the eighth choice. That came after the New Jersey Nets had made Derrick Coleman of Syracuse the top pick and the draft took on a shooter's look. "There is no one happier right now than I am," Kimble said. "It's a young team, up and coming, and it's a perfect situation for me." As a senior, Kimble proved he was fully recovered from knee surgery, leading the nation in scoring with 35.

Running back Malcolm Jones , the Gatorade national player of the year as a senior at Westlake Village Oaks Christian High, appears headed to another season of limited action. Jones, a sophomore, played briefly against Texas and had one carry for six yards against Houston. Unless he is injured, he cannot redshirt. "You always want to get more time," Jones said. "It's just the way it goes. If I'm not playing as much as I would like, that's fine. I'm still only a sophomore.

UCLA guard Jeff Baca looked up and saw tailback Derrick Coleman's backside 20 yards down the field during a live scrimmage during Tuesday's practice. "That was awesome," Baca said. "You make a block, look up and see your tailback in front of you, then one guy misses him, and he's gone. That's encouraging." Coleman's 39-yard touchdown run is why the Bruins have made the change to the "pistol" offense this spring. UCLA averaged a woeful 3.5 yards a carry a year ago, underscoring the need for a consistent running game.

UCLA is headed in a different, bigger direction with its running game this week. Derrick Coleman , a 6-foot, 230-pound sophomore, will get his first start of the season when the Bruins play at Washington State. UCLA has struggled with its running game in recent weeks, and the number of fumbles has become a concern. That has brought the focus to Coleman, who had seven carries in five games before he gained 49 yards in 13 carries against Washington on Saturday. "We need to see more yards after contact and we obviously need to see more security with the ball," running backs coach Wayne Moses said.

UCLA tailback Johnathan Franklin doesn't play mind games when he runs. He darts one way, then another, then kicks in the speed. Nothing he can really explain. "I don't know, maybe I'll see my lineman's butt, or maybe green grass, or the defense move the other direction," Franklin said of his jitterbug style. "Rather than think about it, I just do what my instincts tell me." That style set him off on a 60-yard dart-and-dash touchdown run during Saturday's scrimmage. It was the centerpiece of a 99-yard performance that helped propel him into the No. 1 tailback spot during this morning's practice.

Cornerback Sheldon Price's on-the-job training probably will get held over for one more week. Price, a freshman, will start against California this week, defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough said, and probably will continue in the role against Arizona on Oct. 24. UCLA coaches were hoping Aaron Hester (cracked fibula) would return for the Arizona game, but Coach Rick Neuheisel said that Hester is at least one more week away. Hester, who started at cornerback in the season opener, did little more than run Wednesday.

UCLA running back Milton Knox spent the last few months running up and down the large hill near his family's house. Occasionally, he hit the dunes in Manhattan Beach, plowing his way through the heavy sand. "I'm a man on a mission this year," Knox said. "I know the playbook. The game has slowed down for me. I have to show them what I can do." There is some urgency for Knox and fellow redshirt freshman Johnathan Franklin . Junior Christian Ramirez and sophomore Derrick Coleman are the top two tailbacks.

Forward Derrick Coleman, sidelined because of an injured finger, was fined an undisclosed amount by the Philadelphia 76ers for missing Friday night's game at Detroit and then skipping practice. Coleman's agent, however, called it a misunderstanding, that Coleman was with his family in Detroit and that he has returned to Philadelphia.

Two moments that showed what UCLA tailback Derrick Coleman could accomplish and what he had to overcome came before he was 3 years old. "We had an Easter at his grandmother's house when he was 1; the kids had to wait while we hid the eggs," said May Hamlin, Coleman's mother. "When it was time, Derrick just plowed through everyone, running over the other kids. "His older cousin said right then, 'That kid is going to be a football player.'

UCLA freshman tackle Jeff Baca has caught Oregon defensive end Nick Reed's act, harassing quarterbacks, dominating games and creating chaos, since the two were at Mission Viejo High. Now, for the first time, it will be Baca's job to stop him. Reed, one of the top pass rushers in the nation, will set up shop across from Baca on Saturday, when the Bruins play the Oregon in Eugene. Baca was a freshman at Mission Viejo the last time he and Reed were in the same stadium for a game.
