Silas Redd's slow recovery from knee surgery puts the spotlight on USC tailbacks Tre Madden and Justin Davis heading into Thursday's opener at Hawaii. Redd, the Trojans' leading rusher last season, said on his Twitter feed Monday night that he would not travel to Honolulu with the Trojans. Junior D.J. Morgan also has not been able to participate in contact drills and is expected to remain home when the Trojans depart after practice Tuesday afternoon. That leaves the Trojans with only one tailback who has carried the ball in a college game: sophomore Javorius Allen, who rushed for 32 yards in six carries last season.

Gary Patterson, who helped build Texas Christian into a national college football power, had harsh words for Louisiana State Coach Les Miles after he reinstated top returning running back Jeremy Hill, who pleaded guilty to simple battery after punching a man outside a bar in Baton Rouge. Patterson levied his critical comments after Miles let the LSU team members vote on whether to reinstate Hill. Of course, the vote went Hill's way. Meanwhile, Patterson suspended his top defensive player, end Devonte Fields, for the season-opening game against the Tigers on Aug. 31 at Cowboys Stadium.

Many of USC's defensive players are shifting to new positions in the Trojans' "52" scheme. Morgan Breslin and Devon Kennard are morphing from ends to hybrid linebackers. Leonard Williams moves from tackle to end. Meantime, third-year sophomore Antwaun Woods keeps working at his craft as a nose tackle. "No difference in my world," he said Tuesday. The 6-foot, 310-pound Woods started the first four games last season and then played as a reserve, finishing with 4 1/2 tackles for losses, including three sacks.

USC Coach Lane Kiffin has said he anticipates that quarterbacks Max Wittek and Cody Kessler will both play Thursday against Hawaii. But Kiffin is not revealing how he intends to parse playing time. He has said that Wittek and Kessler would not alternate series and that they probably would not alternate quarters. "We're not going to put anything set in stone about plays or quarters or series," Kiffin said Monday, adding "We'll get a feel for how the game is going and make decisions as we go. " Wittek started two games last season.

It could be called irony. USC football fans might call it hypocrisy. USC fullback Stanley Havili has been in this situation before. The fifth-year senior will make his fourth consecutive opening-game start when No. 14 USC plays Hawaii on Thursday night at Aloha Stadium. "It does seem like I've been here forever," Havili said this week. Havili's final season got off to an awkward start when he was suspended one day into training camp for punching cornerback T.J. Bryant during a conditioning drill a few days earlier. Bryant had surgery on a broken cheekbone and will sit out the opener.

While USC fans booed Lane Kiffin's play-calling during the Trojans' 10-7 loss to Washington State last week, the defense has mostly earned raves. Going into Saturday's nonconference game against Boston College, the defense has given up only one touchdown in two games. The Trojans rank first nationally in rushing defense (15 yards a game) and sacks (11). USC is 11th in total defense (226.5 yards a game) and 19th in scoring defense (11.9 points a game). In January, after Kiffin's father Monte resigned, Kiffin hired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who installed a "52" scheme.
