UCLA looked within to fill its defensive coordinator position Monday, promoting Chuck Bullough and adding Carnell Lake to the staff as cornerbacks coach. Bullough, 40, had been the Bruins' linebackers coach the last three seasons under defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker, who was hired as New Mexico State's coach in December. UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel interviewed candidates outside the program but decided Bullough was best suited in terms of consistency.

Troy Polamalu became USC's first All-American in three years when he was named to the Football Writers Assn. of America team on Wednesday. The junior safety led the Trojans with 98 tackles this season. Just as important, he recovered two fumbles, blocked three punts and intercepted three passes, two of which he returned for touchdowns. "He has a great heart, which the great players have," Coach Pete Carroll said earlier this month.

Ken Norton, Pete Carroll and the crybaby Trojans need to grow up. Norton lacked maturity when he was a player at UCLA and obviously lacks maturity today! Get out the world's tiniest violin. The less we hear you whine the better we like it! Mari Scott Redondo Beach :: In the war of words between Ken Norton and Rick the Slick, who would you believe? Dan Guerrero has made two football hirings and they both stink. Fred Wallin Westlake Village :: Rick Neuheisel has done off the field what his team could not do on the field.

USC linebackers coach Ken Norton, who was wooed by UCLA to return to his alma mater, said Tuesday he would remain with the Trojans. Norton, 41, said he spoke with new Bruins Coach Rick Neuheisel and defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker about joining the UCLA staff as an assistant head coach. Chuck Bullough is UCLA's linebackers coach. "I'm flattered. They'll always be a team in my heart," said Norton, an All-American linebacker for the Bruins in 1987 who played 13 seasons in the NFL.

Thought: Notre Dame should keep Charlie Weis. And barring a monumentally terrible season next fall or some ugly off-field issue, he should remain exactly where he is for a good while more. So three cheers for Mr. Weis. Caveat: The Fighting Irish football coach just got a vote of confidence and is now slated to lead his anemic Notre Dame team for a fifth year -- and this burns me up.

Wesley Morris, a standout wide receiver and defensive back at Kennedy High who was signed by Utah State, may have become one of the first persons affected by the newly formed NCAA Clearinghouse. Morris' scholarship was revoked after it was discovered by the Clearinghouse that he was ineligible, even though he was told by school officials in March that he had met NCAA requirements. The Clearinghouse was formed to provide a standardized review of eligibility for NCAA athletes.

Most of the USC players arrived here Thursday, checking in at the MGM Grand just about the same time as a cheerleading convention. With Coach Pete Carroll in Orlando, Fla., to watch his son play for Pittsburgh in the Tangerine Bowl, the team did not schedule its first mandatory meeting until today. Practice will be held this afternoon at Sam Boyd Stadium. On Thursday night, associate coach DeWayne Walker spoke at a meeting of roughly three-quarters of the team that had already arrived.
