SAN DIEGO -- Matt Kemp is expected to be ready to play again when he is eligible to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on May 29, according to trainer Sue Falsone. “That is our goal,” Falsone said. Kemp was placed on the disabled list Monday with a strained left hamstring. The next day, Kemp received an injection of platelet-rich plasma. He had blood drawn and spun to isolate the platelets, which clot and promote healing. The platelets were injected into the site of the injury.

OAKLAND — What seemed like a routine slide into second base turned into a major injury for Vernon Wells , who will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, a procedure that will sideline the Angels left fielder for eight to 10 weeks. "He thought it popped out and back in — that happens a lot, and guys usually work through it," Manager Mike Scioscia said of Wells, who was injured in the second inning of Sunday's 3-2 loss to San Diego. "But the next inning, there was no chance of him swinging a bat, and we knew it was significant.

Ten more days until Matt Kemp is eligible to return from the disabled list. But as Kemp remains stuck on the railing of the Dodgers' dugout recovering from a strained hamstring, something strange is happening. The Dodgers continue winning. The Dodgers' 6-5 walk-off victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing of their National League-leading 26 wins, but it was probably their most significant. Immediately after closer Kenley Jansen served up a tying solo home run to pinch-hitter Lance Berkman in the top of the ninth inning, the Dodgers loaded the bases for catcher A.J. Ellis, who drew a walk-off walk off Fernando Salas.

Left fielder Juan Rivera could be sidelined for as long as two months, trainer Sue Falsone said. Rivera was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left hamstring injury. Falsone revealed that he, in fact, has a ruptured tendon. Surgery hasn't been ruled out. Utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. joined Rivera on the disabled list Friday with a strained hamstring. Hairston's place on the active roster was taken by Justin Sellers, who was recalled from triple-A Albuquerque.

The Philadelphia Phillies put left fielder Raul Ibanez on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a strained left groin. "It's been bothering him, I guess, a little bit off and on since the beginning of April," General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. Ibanez is batting .312 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs, ranking second in the NL in homers and RBIs.

Reporting from Philadelphia — Rafael Furcal will make the move he resisted. He is heading to the 15-day disabled list. On his way out of the Dodgers' clubhouse Tuesday night, Furcal said his surgically repaired lower back stiffened in a pregame workout, which included fielding grounders at shortstop. Furcal hadn't fielded grounders since he strained his back on a throw across his body Aug. 2. "We decided it was probably the safest thing to do," Manager Joe Torre said.

Reporting from New York Jonathan Broxton could be sidelined because of a bruised elbow for more than a month, considering his rehabilitation program prohibits him from throwing a baseball for the next two to three weeks. With Broxton placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Manager Don Mattingly said converted starter Vicente Padilla would be the Dodgers' primary closer. Kenley Jansen was called up from double-A Chattanooga to replace Broxton on the active roster.

Rafael Furcal , who finally appears to be recovered from a back injury that required surgery two years ago, is heading to the disabled list. Multiple baseball sources told The Times that the Dodgers are planning to move Furcal to the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move hasn't been officially announced. The Dodgers are expected to replace Furcal with veteran shortstop Nick Green , who after Monday's game is batting an altitude-enhanced .219 in 20 games for their triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque.

The Philadelphia Phillies' season-long wave of injuries has claimed All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard for at least 15 days. Howard, who was leading the National League with 81 runs batted in, went on the disabled list Tuesday because of a sprained left ankle. The Phillies said the sprain was moderate. The 2006 NL most valuable player was hurt Sunday while sliding into second base at Washington. He traveled with the team to Miami, but when swelling in the ankle became worse, he returned to Philadelphia for an MRI exam Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO - Eleven more days until Matt Kemp is eligible to return from the disabled list. Kemp's absence was of minimal consequence Thursday, as the first-place Dodgers trampled the last-place San Diego Padres, 8-1, to earn a split of a two-game series at Petco Park. The Dodgers improved to 25-13, including 2-2 since Kemp was placed on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. But the void could be a significant factor in the coming days when the Dodgers host the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series that starts Friday.

SAN DIEGO — Twelve more days until Matt Kemp is eligible to return from the disabled list. If the Dodgers' 4-2 defeat to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday was any indication, they could be the 12 longest days of the season. With Kemp unavailable and Manager Don Mattingly fielding what look like triple-A lineups, the Dodgers have scored a combined three runs in their last two games, both losses. Chris Capuano (5-1) left two pitches up in the strikezone to Chase Headley and that was enough to send him tumbling to his first defeat of the season.

When the Angels placed outfielder Torii Hunter on baseball's restricted list, it focused attention on a rarely used vehicle available to clubs in the major leagues. Unlike the more commonly used disabled list, which is used for injuries and requires a player to sit out a specified minimum number of days, the restricted list offers the broadest and most flexible option for a team and player. "It's meant to be a convenience for both the club and the player — the club not to play short-handed and the player to tend to his circumstances," MLB spokesman Mike Teevan said.

The list of injured Dodgers keeps growing, with Matt Kemp and Juan Uribe going on the disabled list Monday to join Jerry Hairston Jr. and Juan Rivera, among others. But the Dodgers' pitching staff, including Clayton Kershaw, their ace left-hander, largely has steered clear of injury, a key reason why the Dodgers have kept playing well early this season. Kershaw was stellar again Monday night in a duel with Arizona's Ian Kennedy, holding the Diamondbacks scoreless in seven innings of work as the Dodgers won, 3-1, at Dodger Stadium.
