Disease Detection International Inc. said Monday that its Brazilian joint venture has won an order from the large state of Sao Paulo for as much as $4 million worth of the company's SeroCard HIV-1 AIDS tests. Sao Paulo will use the 1.2 million tests in a broad program for low-income people. The state has a population of 30 million and is expected to order more tests through next year, Disease Detection said.

Disease Detection International Inc. in Irvine said it has received $2.5 million from investors who bought shares of DDI stock by redeeming stock warrants. President H. Thad Morris said 98% of the company's outstanding warrants have been redeemed. Warrants are certificates that give holders the option to buy stock at a stated price. Morris said his company, which makes test kits to measure several diseases, plans to invest the proceeds from the stock sales in certificates of deposit and other short-term notes.

Disease Detection International Inc., a maker of pregnancy and AIDS testing kits, said Monday that it has sold $3 million worth of convertible preferred stock in a private placement--which should help get the company's common stock listed on the NASDAQ market for small corporations. The developer of a seven-minute AIDS test and its former parent company have traded temporary restraining orders over the ownership of technology. Editek Inc. in Burlington, N.C., and Disease Detection International Inc. in Irvine are arguing over a licensing agreement they made in 1985, when Editek formed Disease Detection. The subsidiary was spun off in 1988. Over the years, both companies have continued to develop biological tests.

Disease Detection International Inc. of Irvine said Tuesday that it will begin clinical trials of a seven-minute AIDS test under U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations. Schiff & Co.--a consultant in West Caldwell, N.J., that specializes in pharmaceutical and diagnostic regulations--will conduct the clinical studies and FDA submissions of the device, called SeroCard(R) HIV-1. Testing will require three to five months.
